(135,425 posts)I can't imagine bringing a six year old to a film like that.
Gotta let kids be kids.

(37,158 posts)I remember going to Lethal Weapon 2 (in '89) and the guy behind me brought his kid, who was about that age.
I can't believe the movies some people bring kids to.
Well, maybe I can: My parents saw The Godfather with me and my siblings along, except that was at a drive-in in a station wagon, where we were in our jammies and had sleeping bags. I remember vague impressions of old people talking, people at parties, and a guy yelling because he had a horse in his bed. Needless to say, I wasn't paying much attention and didn't get a lot of it. But that's the luxury of a drive-in "bubble". In a regular theater? It's still nuts.

They usually have two films--one is PG or a kid's flick/Pixar type thing, and the second film is for the R crowd.

(128,827 posts)Whole family in a station wagon, us kids in the back with the passenger bench seat down. Loaded up with blankets, pillows, popcorn and Koolaid in a plastic jug thermos. That was back in 1972 when they used to have the $1 a carload specials to see 6 movies (we were usually out of there after the 3rd or 4th). Saw "Ben"', "The Godfather", "Tales from the Crypt", among some of the films that released back then.
Was 10 and agree about the gross-out with the horse head and with the slo-mo machine-gunning of Fredo. But yeah, kids don't often connect - particularly because many cartoon were violent and we were busy cracking on the teens in the nearby pickup truck making out.

(37,158 posts)I was a little younger than you were. Having a horse in your bed would have been neato (thought the suburban kid who knew nothing of real horses).
It was pretty gross... Sheets get pulled back and
Man... Those were the days. Tinny speaker hooked to a window, windshield wiper going if it started to rain, making the trek to the bathroom (or going in a cup).

(25,699 posts)Every time something bad happens to a kid, the hand-wringing starts and people try to concoct some way to blame the parents.
Yeah, how fucking DARE those assholes take their kid to a movie. Don't they know people get SHOT in theaters?
GET A ROPE!

(135,425 posts)If it were me I wouldn't have taken a child that young to that film.
A six year old doesn't need to be attending an R rated midnight show.
I come from a generation that believes that children should get a decent night's sleep and enjoy a fairly regular routine. At age six, they need more than the eight hours that an adult gets and being up after midnight isn't good for establishing a routine. Also, scenes of violence can have a negative effect on a developing mind. The parents did demonstrate poor judgment, but they didn't "deserve" what happened to their little one.
I'm quite sure the parent/s didn't take the kid to the movies with the idea that some asshole was going to shoot the child. I'm sure the parent/s would love a "do over" about now. Pity they couldn't get one. I feel sad that they've lost their little one. I am quite sure they are heartbroken.

(25,699 posts)Seriously, when something like this happens, the first people out the gate are DU's right-wing zombie motherfuckers howling about their gun rights. The second are the hand-wringing concern trolls who want to blame the victims somehow.
Fine, you're not blaming the victims. You're simply expressing concern for the moviegoers' ability to enjoy the movie. Or sighing over the apparent violation of inviolable and sacred MPAA recommendations.

If you don't think disrupting the sleep patterns of young children and exposing them to violent imagery in films at an early age is harmful, well, those are thoughts YOU hold in your head. And they speak to your level of awareness about child development.

There's a lot of confusion still present on the scene it would seem. http://www.sacbee.com/2012/07/20/4644599/gunman-kills-12-at-dark-knight.html
"This is a horrific event," Aurora police chief Daniel J. Oates told reporters during a news conference. There was no evidence of a second gunman, Oates said.
