We live in a very sick society IMHO.
We have a department of homeland security so we can feel safe from terrorists yet we are supposed to except the idea that anyone should be able to buy any kind of weapon designed to kill people and be able to carry it any damn where they choose to go.
What I am saying here is that the two ideas are diametrically opposed. Not that every person owning a gun is a terrorist but anyone owning a gun could potentially terrorize others with it. How can we protect ourselves from the gun owners? We are supposed to take it on faith that gun owners are law abiding citizens and would not go around shooting people. Why do we not take it on faith that foreigners will not come here to terrorize us? The reason is because they have and could potentially do it again. By the same reasoning gun owners have terrorized us and could potentially do it again.
I do not like the current move toward cowering to the gun culture in this country. We need to as a people coalesce around the idea that our safety is threatened by the increase in people with guns in this country.
I feel that the gun lobby is bulling the rest of us and this needs to stop. I look forward to the day when carrying a loaded weapon is thought of as an anti social act by the majority of people.
I am not at all swayed by the argument that the second amendment prevents us as a society from taking actions to keep us safe from gun owners. The recent decisions by the courts restricting anti gun legislation are the same as if the courts overturned Roe or the passing of Citizens United or any other turning back of progressive advances that society has made over the years. They all have their birth in groups like the NRA or ALEC and other right wing anti progressive groups.
We as a people have the right and duty to work to protect ourselves from gun owners with reasonable restrictions just as we have the right and duty to work to protect ourselves from corporations that threaten our well being.
It's time that we as reasonable people stop letting ourselves by bullied by gun owners in this country and on this board! It is our right just as they feel they have a right to prevent it!
