Bane Creator Chuck Dixon: Limbaughs Batman Conspiracy Theory Ridiculous Im a Staunch Conservative
Making an unplanned phone call into the nationally syndicated radio program Schnitt Show yesterday, comic book writer Chuck Dixon, co-creator of the character Bane, refuted claims made by Rush Limbaugh that the homophonic similarities between the Batman villain and Mitt Romney's financial services company Bain suggest a liberal conspiracy to smear the presidential candidate.
"Graham and I are both staunch conservatives, so from our angle there is no liberal agenda," Dixon said, referring to his DC partner Graham Nolan.
(snip)
As Bleeding Cool notes, Dixon is "one of the comic book industry's best-known political conservatives."
(snip)
"As for his appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, Bane is a force for evil and the destruction of the status quo," Dixon said. "He's far more akin to an Occupy Wall Street type if you're looking to cast him politically. And if there ever was a Bruce Wayne running for the White House it would have to be Romney."

(49,445 posts)Besides, Romney would have gutted Gotham's businesses with outsourcing and cut social services for the unemployed left behind.
In fact, I'll be the problem with Gotham is that Romney was the president or governor in years prior!

In Nolan's first Batman movie, Alfred mentions to Bruce that the cave they found under the mansion was part of the pre-Civil War era Underground Railroad, where the Wayne family hid escaped slaves they assisted to freedom.
I read somewhere that the original creators of Batman were inspired by the Zorro, The Shadow and Sherlock Holmes characters. Batman is a hybrid of all three. The Bruce Wayne/Batman alter egos is a direct copy of the Don Diego/Zorro character, and his use of darkness and a baritone voice echoes The Shadow. To defeat the crime syndicates, Wayne has to use logic to form strategies and build the tools he needs to bring them to justice. No where did I ever think that Bruce Wayne/Batman was ultra conservative. He reminded me more of an FDR or Teddy Roosevelt type plutocrat than a Ronnie Reagan or Mitt Romney type.

(23,664 posts)And I've never seen a movie based on a comic character except Roger Rabbit.
So I couldn't care less what the political leanings of the Batman movie people are.
But I do think it's funny that the whole controversy has made fat druggie limbaugh look even stupider than normal.
This story needs to be repeated daily.

(6,238 posts)SPOILERS!! below so scroll past this if you don't want to see.
First of all, Bane loves to talk about the people, but in the same breath that he tells them Gotham belongs to the "people", he also tells them that if they try to leave he will kill them all. He has a nuke in the city and threatens to use it if anyone tries to leave. So much for a fighter for the people. He is also an agent of the League of Shadows and is a servant of Talia. The League's reason for destroying Gotham is never very clear, simply that it has become decadent and corrupt, which is true, but they are willing to murder thousands to get rid of the corruption. Not only that, the fact is that Talia planned to blow up the city and everyone in it regardless of Bane's revolution and Bane knew it. So sure if by hero you mean a man who is planning on trapping the people within Gotham and killing them all, then so he's a hero.

(12,804 posts)by the Romney types and who are using nonviolent methods to protest corporate greed are evil?
I don't get that feeling from Chuck Nolan's Batman movies. I think Nolan's films attack the abuse of power and even is willing to show that our hero, Batman, can be tempted by the dark side of power abuse too, but in the end Bruce Wayne rejects absolute power.
I view Bane as a metaphor for Eric Prince and the Blackwater type corporations.

(1,502 posts)This is about the creator of Bane not Batman and it has nothing to do with the movie. Why the OP chose to make up that headline is beyond me.

If for no other reason than that, it should be around forever.

The concept of fighting crime because police are handcuffed by bleeding heart bureaucrats is highly exaggerated but interesting.

(1,502 posts)It's a different unrelated guy with the last name Nolan who illustrated Bane in the comics. Director Christopher Nolan is using the character in the movie but has nothing to with the right-wing nut who created Bane in the 90's and that guy has no input on the movie.
I feel like people are trying to slime this movie in a very similar bullshit way that Limbaugh did.

I recently read a book called Batman and Philosophy written by various philosophy professors in the U.S. and one of them pointed out that Batman is often hunted down because he is a danger to the State and the status quo. His very existence threatens the State's role as the sole legitimate user of violence. Traditionally conservatives have been very big on protecting the State, especially, in its role as the guardian of law and order.
