My humble take on the matter:
-The Republicans are dying for a cause that will rally the troops to the polls, so to speak. New gun control measures would be like red meat to their base. Any call for new gun control measures by President Obama or the Democrats in Congress will sound the dinner bell for the NRA and every blue-collar swing state that has a large population of gun owners. We saw it in 1994, and we could easily see it again. Notice how there has been almost nothing said of gun control on the national stage since 2004 by anyone in the White House, despite several high-profile shootings since then.
In a race that only has Obama up by a few percentage points nationally, it would be political suicide to say anything about gun control now. If he waits until after his re-election to make the call, the furor over this incident will have died down (we as a society have such a short memory, unfortunately).
So, there will be much wringing of hands and calls for soul-searching, but my prediction is that ultimately nothing substantial will come of this tragedy.

(19,224 posts)He knows he needs to throw them something, because he's not energizing them nearly enough to beat Obama come November.
Another prediction: no matter what Obama says on this, even if he says nothing at all, Romney will say something about the Democrats wanting to ban guns. He won't be able to resist.

(19,224 posts)For example, here in MN you can't buy an assault weapon without a permit from the local police department. They do a thorough background check on you, send you your card, and then you can purchase a handgun or assault rifle. At the gun store, they do another background check on you as well. Then, the permit expires after 2 years, at which point you need to go through the process again. I'd love to see something like this expanded nationwide. The point I was trying to make in my OP is that there are millions of Americans who would NOT be OK with any new gun laws, and any calls for new gun control measures will bring them to the polls in droves come November.
There was a time I was very pro-gun, when I was a young, stupid teenager. But, as I've grown up and matured, I've come to realize there are far more important things to life than keeping a bunker of rifles and ammo squirreled away.

(154,021 posts)before american s collectively get our asses out of you know where. Sadly, at this point, I expect them, like clockwork. I wasn't shocked by this at all. Since Columbine we just have had a steady drumbeat of more and more of them.
Columbine was shocking, this is almost normal. We could even call it a new normal

(4,759 posts)The faux outrage and clamoring for more laws after the Giffords shooting in Arizona was ludicrous. 24 hours hadn't passed and the whores in DC called press conferences on Sunday to act like they were going to do something.

(12,751 posts)As the demographics of the United States continues to shift toward diversity, the Democratic Party is going to be the solid majority party in the future: as the older, whiter, and right-wing element, including the gun-cuddling element, continues to shrink, sensible gun control will once again be on the agenda.
I predict that by 2030, with a solid Democratic majority and a progressive majority on the Supreme Court, our gun laws will come to resemble Canada's and Australia's. In other words, the more liberal our society becomes, the more our gun laws will resemble an actual progressive, and sensible, set of statues such as the rest of the civilized world already has.

But to think there will never be any regulations, you would be wrong. Expect it to happen eventually. Gun nuttery hasn't anything yet.

We are a nation so deeply entrenched in our blind love of guns, we've let reason go a long time ago. I'm not sure if there's a road back from where we've gone.
Funny aside; I want a cigarette, which I quit years ago. Why? Because those are bad for us as a society and we've acknowledged the hazard and addressed the issue.
We are a strange land of even stranger people.
