Dr. Ted Baehr Responds to DARK KNIGHT Shooting in Colorado
Date: Friday, July 20, 2012
Hollywood, California In a statement today, Christian media scholar and family values advocate Dr. Ted Baehr responded to the news of the shooting massacre of at least a dozen people early this morning in Aurora, Colo. at a midnight showing of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES:
"The shooting at the midnight showing of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will be blamed on many things.
"One reporter who called me this morning blamed it on violence in movies. Certainly, violence in movies, television, and video games has had a tremendous impact on society. Over 500,000 studies, capped by the latest Dartmouth University study, show that violence in the media influences susceptible youths to commit violence. That said, most people are not susceptible. Most are just desensitized or scared.
"Another reporter blamed it specifically on the Batman movies. Yet, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is nowhere near as violent as the last Batman movie, and Batman himself tells Catwoman not to shoot to kill in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. The message of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is justice and self sacrifice. The villains and the killers in the movie are the 'socialist left wing Occupy Wall Street power to the people' villain Bane and his compatriots, who are clearly shown to be wrong, evil and bad, and who get their comeuppance. Also, it would have been almost impossible for this killer in Colorado to have even seen the new Batman movie before the 12:30 screening.
"Some people will blame it on guns, although countries that have tried hard to crack down on guns, like England, are now finding that knives and head butting are out of control. Thus, it isn't the head butting or the knives, but the fact that people are stewing in the juice of their own wickedness, because, as the Bible says, they don't know the loving God who gave us a way of salvation through Jesus Christ from the wickedness of the human heart.
"Some people will blame poverty, or a lack of education. But, James Holmes, the alleged killer, was getting his doctorate in neuroscience and came from an upper middle class family!
"People will look at every possible reason maybe some will ponder the fact that Holmes was a Democrat and hated the anti socialist message of the movie.
"Actually, none of these reasons answer the question 'Why.' The fact is that this is an evil act committed by an evil person, who did not know the truth of Jesus Christ that would set him free from such wickedness. The answer is not more laws, the answer is not to banish movies, nor neuroscience programs, nor weapons that can be used to protect, but rather to get the Word of God out. Because 'faith comes through hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ (Romans 10:17).'
"I used to be on the radical left, but Jesus Christ got hold of me, and I've tried to live my life every day by enjoying Him, using the power of God's Holy Spirit. As the Word of God says in Galatians 5:22 23, 'The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there is no law.'
"If you ban the fruit of the Spirit of Jesus Christ from society, including the education system, you're not banning God; you're banning goodness, justice, truth, peace, kindness, joy, gentleness, self control, and love."

(4,340 posts)But I do guess it is fairly safe to assume that if someone attains the education of a Ph.D student, there is a good chance that person is at least liberal in a lot of ways.

(11,366 posts)Dozens of people are injured. At least 12 people are dead. The body count could rise. Even the 2012 attack dogs are taking a siesta from the partisan mudslinging in the wake of the tragedy. If you're going to publish a story about an alleged mass murderer's politics, you had better get it right.

(14,177 posts)Some would say the shooter is a Democrat. Some would say the shooter is a Tea Part Member. Some would say he is mentally ill. Right now we have little fact to go on and a lot of speculation. I think we need to have a discussion about why we don't have a process for seeing this kind of thing coming. I heard that his mother was not surprised. That should give us pause for concern.

(53,986 posts)As stated above, the shooter was a sick individual. His violent antisocial behavior speaks neither to Republican nor Democratic philosophies. It speaks to neither gun control nor total gun freedom political ideologies. He's a deranged, amoral man who felt left out from society and decided to lash out for what will prove to be, no doubt, entirely irrational reasons. Perhaps he was egged on by provocative language irresponsibly thrown about in our public discourse. The tragedy of this shooting speaks to how isolated the mentally ill can be in our society. Someone should've caught this young man before he killed and interfered. Perhaps someone tried. In my guts I don't want to accede to the view that society is mostly powerless to stop all the future incidents of this kind. The powerlessness to protect the innocent, or to keep from becoming an innocent victim of this sort of random crime, is painful to contemplate. But it's there. We can improve social services, raise awareness of mental illness and the consequences of violent imagery in our social messaging, but we'll never build in guaranteed security against random violence.

(81,195 posts)I'm sending that Mother Jones link to these assholes and alerting them that it's beneath them to be spreading lies, libel, and slander.
YES it's a chain email. That means it's going out to others who aren't paying much attention but could believe it. They'll take it for granted and not seek out the truth. They'll just swallow it the same way they swallow what limbaugh says and that everyone at Pox Noise says. These people who issue these emails are hoping to influence public opinion and they're also hoping that no one's paying attention. It rattles their cages when somebody calls them on it. I frankly don't expect them to do anything about it. But they need to know they've been caught, and challenged.
NO I don't believe everything I read especially in chain emails. I do, however, like to fact-check them. Remember, if this was sent to me, it was spammed to hundreds of thousands of people. People who will then believe this and spread the lie to their friends. Finding and posting the truth and correcting the record gives me something substantial to refute them with, when I email them with a complaint. Which I did. And it isn't just me. All of us are seeing these things. And I think it's useful for all of us to have material available to refute shit like this. We can answer with facts and the people parroting this have nothing with which to answer back.
I think it's also wise to spread this around for those who haven't seen it. It's more psy-ops among the extreme wrong wing trying to influence public opinion and dirty the Democrats by inferring that this is one of those dreaded liberal Dems they've spent 30 years resolutely and systematically attacking and demeaning.
I believe in return psy-ops if the bad guys try to send theirs my way.
Anyway, thanks everybody, especially those with the concrete answers. Those are helpful and we all need that data.

We need more mental health recognition, treatment, and intervention. We must stop the stigmatization of having a MH problem and encourage those who need help to get help.
It is NOT a personal ailing to have MH issues. I is a failure of society to support help for those who need it.
What happened was a terrible thing, but the man is obviously ill. That's the only actionable and reason. Period.
People who try to gain mileage out of this travesty are more guily IMO. What's their excuse?
