Kid's birthday party, I'm having a quiet conversation with another guy that ends up a bit political.

We pretty much agree and are winding up this portion of our conversation when wingnut mama comes over and loudly interjects her opposing opinion. I turn to wingnut mama and in a reasonable tone ask her why she holds the opinion she does at which point the family "Miss Anne" comes over and tells me I'm being argumentative and to just STFU..

It's a kid's birthday party, I'm not going to be the the one to turn it into WWIII over some stupid wingnut talking point but there are times I just want to go verbal Billy Jack on these people..

I would have just turned to her and said, "Jesus Christ, you are nosy. We were having private conversation here. Nobody asked your opinion. Do you always eavesdrop on other people's conversations? That's pretty damn rude." Being rational doesn't work with these people, but sometimes you can shame them.

It's all but impossible to escape the wingnut talking points down here in the deep south and it's remarkably easy to internalize them, it takes a real independent minded contrarian type personality to differ from everyone you come in contact with on your basic approach to life.

Unfortunately wingnut mama although quite intelligent and highly skilled/paid is not a contrarian type, she buys the rhetoric she hears around her constantly and it never occurs to her that there might be another side.

WM is a very outgoing "people person" as long as she stays off politics I actually like her quite a bit..

And, I know exactly what you mean about the wingnut talking points. I live in a very red part of South Carolina. A lot of people around here think that if you are white, you are a republican. The looks on their faces when they find out that some of us white people have nothing but complete unmitigated contempt for all things GOP are priceless.

Miss Anne was fine with Wingnut Mama, they are quite simpatico emotionally even though they don't completely agree on politics.

And yeah, the irony is strong with this one, Miss Anne I mean.

Funny thing is that most of my side of the family calls her "Miss ____" with her actual name and she takes it as a compliment.

gaffe the other day. (May not have been clear to anyone other than me

Usually when people accuse you of being 'argumentative,' they are losing the argument, in my experience. Whey they're winning the argument, you aren't being argumentative, you're just discussing

We talked but he didn't like what he was hearing so the last thing this knuckle dragger says to me is, "And don't bring up the Trayvon Martin case to me ever again!" and began to storm off.

Then I got my last word in. I said "Hey buddy, you were the one who brought up the subject to me."

He had a puzzled look on his face as I walked away.
