"So far, we've raised the average temperature of the planet just under 0.8 degrees Celsius...

...and that has caused far more damage than most scientists expected.

(A third of summer sea ice in the Arctic is gone, the oceans are 30 percent more acidic, and since warm air holds more water vapor than cold, the atmosphere over the oceans is a shocking five percent wetter, loading the dice for devastating floods.)"

to America and the rest of the world...

Meanwhile, America's heartland blisters with forest-devouring fires. Dust-Bowl era drought and record-shattering heat causes wholesale withering and desiccating of corn, beans, and cattle.

Sooner or later, everyone will realize the Republican-corporate lies for what they are. but McKibben makes plain how godawful ugly the consequences of their lies already are...

It becomes a known factor that climate change is real and we've gone beyond the point of no return? Who will they blame? How will they justify their years of denying it and making people believe it's a myth?

70% of people polled recently agree that climate change is very real. The GOP hitched their wagon to the wrong issue on this and I think people will turn against them very quickly when that is fully realized.

That's why we have deserts in one place and ice in another. So you're saying climate change isn't happening because the entire planet is not the same temperature? That doesn't make any sense.

The AVERAGE temperature has been raised. That's a fact and it is not a good one.

The grass (aka weeds) is turning brown and I don't remember that happening before. The garden needs watering every day and the plants that love hot weather are on steroids. The bugs seem to have decreased overall, too. No squash bugs at all. We don't seem to have as many birds around this year which makes it all the odder since they eat insects. Maybe they've gone north. I miss the owls at night. Usually there is a chorus of them, now only 1 or 2 of the same variety. I'm in New Hampshire, by the way.

...Does Willard stand with the Republican-corporate pack of climate change lies? Or has he Etched a Sketched on this issue, like all the others?

I want to hear Willard speak out and OWN this stinky Republican-corporate bullshit in front of the farmers with scorched fields, and fishermen with dry lakes and rivers. Willard is the Republican boy-O, and so he must embrace the Republican global climate change Big Lie.

That .08º represents a fraction of the total energy we've added.

regulations! It's a hoax, I tell ya! A hoax! It's a conspiracy!

I know of a German scientist living in Bora Bora who disagrees with the 2,000 scientists that say there's global warming caused by humans! So that proves it!

The third number is why we will see significant destruction globally and there will be nothing done until it is far too late, if ever. The entire global economy hinges on us burning all of our fossil fuels and all of the fuels we have yet to find. The only thing that will actually change that is if the climate changes fast enough and we take a massive population drop from it.

I'll keep recycling. I'll be honest though, I'm a lot less motivated after this article.

I have been so careful composting and recycling but reading this makes me feel like I am trying to empty the ocean with a thimble. It is frightening and I have never seen an article about climate change written from this angle and done so well.

21. This article points out the REAL hurdle to stopping climate change.

That hurdle is the global economy. It's not taxes (carbon or otherwise), it's not that it will cut into profits, and it's not the will to actually change.

It's the entire world economy. Every bit of it eventually hinges on fossil fuels. We will burn every bit of them, regardless of profit level. There is nothing to stop that except for the unthinkable.

I've read a lot on climate change, but this article really explains just how impossible it all is. It's like a life sentence without the possibility of parole. To keep hope is a recipe for madness.

once the planet finally cools again. the next species to rise to dominance won't have fossil fuels to burn and kill themselves off.
