Weld jury convicts former GOP chairman accused of voter fraud, forgery

A Weld jury turned in two convictions the case of a former Colorado Republican Party chairman accused of voter fraud by filling out his ex-wife's ballot and mailing it in.

Jury members deliberated for about four hours after attorneys on both sides in the case of Steve Curtis, 57, delivered their closing arguments this morning in a collective two hours of formal address to the jury. Curtis, who served as chairman of the Colorado Republican Party from 1997-99 is was found guilty voter fraud and forgery after prosecutors say he in October 2016 he filled out a ballot delivered to his Firestone house addressed to his ex-wife, and forged her signature. She and Curtis had been separated for months by that point though, and she was living in South Carolina at the time. He faces up to three years in prison, although Weld District Court Judge Julie Hoskins said probation is more likely.

DENVER – Steve Curtis, the former chairman for the Colorado Republican Party, was found guilty Thursday by a Weld County jury of voter fraud and forgery.

Curtis, 58, was arrested in March and accused of signing his wife’s mail-in ballot for her, which is a misdemeanor in Colorado. He was also charged with forgery of a public record, a fifth-degree felony.

His ex-wife had moved to South Carolina and learned her ballot had already been cast when she called the county clerk to see how she could vote from there.......................
