If the Rethugs do nothing when Mueller is fired, does that mean that Congressional oversight has been reduced to ashes and Drumpt becomes a tyrant?

(13,866 posts)Burning down Congress and blaming it on the Democrats would be a Reichstag moment.
Let's not get too carried away with the hyperbole.

(28,270 posts)Mustn't criticize the Dear Leader in time of war eh?
Trump and his party will suspend the constitution and bill of rights just for the duration, like Hitler and the Nazis did in Germany.

(58,785 posts)Germany had lived under authoritarian kaisers and authoritarian church for centuries through WW1. For about 15 years, while their nation was desperately poor and broken they tried a democracy mostly imposed on them. In that same era, secular changes caused conservatives to fear their children, especially their daughters, and their nation were collapsing into a Gomorrah. Almost all Germans remembered the good old days under a relatively enlightened and progressive authoritarian kaiser when things were far better for them.
And many longed to return to them. Hitler promised a return to authoritarian security, to restore prosperity, wellbeing, morality with a three-legged program strikingly like what Ronald Reagan promised here -- plus some sinister promises to rescue the economy from the Jews. He was a powerfully confident "strong man" without the maniacal slathering shown in most films we see here. Conservatives bought it, and many on the far left, wooed by inserting "socialist" in the party name and making a few promises, bought it also.
But despite the similarities in the weaknesses of people, what they wanted to return to was enormously different from what we expect for ourselves.

(10,857 posts)... I think a Reichstag fire is what they're going to need to get away with firing Mueller.
It looks like Mueller anticipated the Trump plan to fire him off if he got too close, and had a plan of his own.
If Dick Cheney suddenly leaves Dubai and shows up in DC, then we can start really fretting about a Reichstag moment.

If Mueller is fired:
Do not panic.
Let Trump panic.
It will be his end.
