How far would Alabama's proposed anti-abortion amendment go?

What happens after that?

It might depend on how the U.S. Supreme Court approaches the subject of abortion in the next few years, and -- if the high court allows more restrictions on the practice -- how far the Alabama Legislature wants to go.

For now, supporters call it a statement of values.

“The immediate effect would be a powerful message sent to the nation that Alabama believes that every life matters and that we are willing to stand in defense of our citizens who can’t yet defend themselves,” Cole Wagner, director of the Alliance for a Pro-Life Alabama, which supports the measure, wrote in an email. “Amendment 2 merely declares a policy as the will of the people, leaving the specific prohibitions or liberties to the Legislature.”
