Birmingham mayor's office employee arrested on domestic violence charge

The deputy director of Birmingham’s Division of Social Justice and Racial Equity was arrested and later charged with felony domestic violence and burglary over the weekend in Birmingham. Uche Bean, 32, was appointed deputy of the office this November and has worked within the mayor’s office for over three years.

“We are aware of an incident that occurred over the weekend. This is a personal matter and not related to any city activity,” the mayor’s office said in a statement to APR Sunday. “It is currently under investigation. There will be no other statement at this time.”

Bean was booked into the Birmingham City Jail Friday evening and held until Sunday, when she was formally charged with second-degree domestic violence and third-degree burglary, according to Al.com.

Later Sunday, Bean was transferred to Jefferson County Corrections, where she posted $30,000 and was released late Sunday evening.
