Raise taxes? No way! Kill Medicaid? Hell, yeah!

Budget committee approves cutting Alabama Medicaid by $156 million

The chairman of the Alabama House budget committee proposed a dramatic $156 million cut in funding for the state Medicaid program today after his plan to level-fund it and other key agencies unraveled.

Rep. Steve Clouse, R-Ozark, proposed the Medicaid cuts after the budget committee rejected a cigarette tax increase that was critical to the level-funding plan.

The usually low-key Clouse, animated and clearly frustrated, said he did not support cuts to Medicaid and considers it the foundation of health care in the state. "But evidently there's a lot of legislators that still question Medicaid," Clouse said. "There's a lot of citizens around this state that are still questioning Medicaid and what it does. And we've got a decision to make in this state."

"Are we going to be the first state in the United States of America that finally says, 'We're going to do away with the Medicaid system?

"I don't know, we may make that decision as a citizenry. And it's time that we had that debate."

It would cut the General Fund appropriation for Medicaid from $685 million to $529 million, a 23 percent reduction.

State Health Officer Don Williamson said the cuts would be compounded because state dollars are used to draw down federal money. Williamson said the state would no longer be able to run a Medicaid program that complies with federal requirements. He said that would mean a loss of federal funding, which would end the state program. That could lead to lawsuits and federal court intervention, he said. Without a Medicaid program, Williamson said hospitals and nursing homes would close and doctors would leave the state.

"If Alabama chooses not to have a Medicaid program, you will see an impact on the health care system that you can only begin to imagine," Williamson said.

About 1 million Alabama residents qualify for some level of Medicaid service. The program serves children, low-income pregnant women, the disabled, nursing home residents and others.

Alabama claims highest rate of disability in country

Alabama is the least able state in the nation. We are among the least able to climb stairs, least able to see with glasses, least able to put on our own clothes, least able to run our own errands and least able to think clearly.

Overall, Alabama leads the nation in disability rates, as nearly a third of Alabama residents require some assistance to negotiate basic daily life.

1. So the GOP actually doesnt care one bit about the lives of people in need?

They actually will go out of their way to vote for making rich richer while knowingly killing poor people?

And the good Americans are doing what about this?

2. Good Americans in Alabama?

What are "we" doing?

Voting in more Republicans. Standing firmly against any tax increases.

Pushing for tax revenue from casinos and a state lottery.

Having a state government "we" can drown in a bathtub.

If the poor need anything, ask your church.

Oh, and you better go to church.

3. Translation, children running the government.

The remarkable thing is there are so many in need in Alabama, right?

Like everywhere else, isnt it even worse there?

I know that much of this is about whites hating blacks, but arent there a lot of whites in need too?

4. I think for whites it's "Southern Pride."

The old, "We po' but proud!"

Rural whites are bible-clutching, gun-toting, church-going racially-segregated Republican bloc-voters. They wouldn't ask the Federal government for anything, other than what's due - Medicare and Social Security.

When the nation put "that black man" in the White House, well, that killed the Democratic Party in Alabama.

We are on the edge of being flushed, and it looks like poor Alabamians are going to have to leave Alabama, just like most of the Hispanics have already left. America still exists somewhere, doesn't it?

5. Lemme disagree with one thing, they WOULD ask for EVERYTHING, most of them, eventually

I know this from personal experience.

The one certainty in life is these type of people are always hypocrites about absolutely everything.

It may take a while before things got bad enough, but they would.

6. This is the "Heart of Dixie."

There is a real resentment towards the Federal government. And benefits that include blacks?

No - they understand it this way - no taxes, nothing to give away, nothing to take. You make it on your own with family and church.

Alabama is already one of the top 'taker' states. We rely on Federal money for everything. Schools, military bases, defense industry employment - it's all teabagger "Keep your government hands off my Medicare!" stupidity. But the Federal government is just a taxing burden to the people, and too much government.

Yes, nose will fall off face, but Alabama pundits agree we are a generation away from Democratic values - at best.

This state is an experiment in total Republicanism. Just the right people will be left with a service class to support them. No one else need apply.

7. To my mind...

this is where the Democratic underground exists.

This is where Democrats are under assault, and American values and traditions are disappearing.

This is the crucible of rightwing fascism, the genocidal Social Darwinism experiment.

People are dying. The State of Alabama couldn't care less.

8. Alabama House passes Medicaid cuts.

Alabama House rejects, then passes Medicaid cuts to state budget

The Alabama House of Representatives approved a plan to cut state funding to the Medicaid Agency by $156 million next year.

The House approved the budget amendment 46-44.

The vote came on reconsideration. It had rejected the amendment 46-45 moments before.

The House passed the General Fund budget, with the Medicaid cuts, immediately after approving the amendment.

The budget bill goes to the Senate.
