A fed bear is a dead bear.

Summer is here and this article has some great advice for fellow DUers who take to the outdoors.

Troublesome Turnagain Arm bear killed by Fish and Game

Alaska Department of Fish and Game officers have killed a 2-year-old female brown bear that had become dangerously comfortable around humans along the Turnagain Arm Trail. The animal was put down around noon Tuesday.
"Her habituation to people was her demise," said Fish and Game biologist Jessy Coltrane.

Starting in April, the bear was repeatedly sighted along the trail and the Seward Highway between Potter and Windy. It drew crowds of spectators with cameras, surprised runners and boldly approached hikers. She appeared to have been drawn to pullouts along the road by discarded garbage, fish and a dog carcass.

Authorities posted warning signs and, in one case, used rubber bullets to chase it off.

1. Still unclear why she needed to be killed. Was anyone, specifically, threatened?

Reminding me of the breathtaking lack of imagination used in killing a trapped cougar in downtown Santa Monica yesterday, since they couldn't wait for it to be tranquilized...

3. I think it was a "proactive" killing.

She was becoming too used to human contact from feeding in the dumpsters.

Bummer.

4. Ah, "proactive." In other words, "we don't have a reason yet, but we'll kill her."

5. Yeah, pretty much.

But the alternative is having a reason. Which would suck also.
