State senator takes lawsuit over reduced permanent fund dividend to Alaska Supreme Court

The lawsuit over Gov. Bill Walker's partial veto of the 2016 Alaska Permanent Fund dividend is heading to the state Supreme Court.

Anchorage Democratic state Sen. Bill Wielechowski, whose suit was rejected by Anchorage Superior Court Judge William Morse last month, filed an appeal to the Alaska Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The appeal seeks to restore the dividend to the $2,072 initially set aside by the Legislature, which Walker's veto reduced to $1,022 — for a total savings to the state of more than $650 million. Walker said that the state's multibillion-dollar budget gap made the original PFD amount unaffordable.

Wielechowski, an attorney, is representing himself in the case.
