Nepal official says human waste on Everest a major problem

Source: AP NEWS

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — The chief of Nepal’s mountaineering association says human waste left by climbers on Mount Everest has become a problem that is causing pollution and threatening to spread disease on the world’s highest peak.

Ang Tshering told reporters Tuesday that the more than 700 climbers and guides who spend nearly two months on Everest’s slopes each climbing season leave large amounts of feces and urine, and the issue has not been addressed. He said Nepal’s government needs to get the climbers to dispose of the waste properly so the mountain remains pristine.

Hundreds of foreign climbers attempt to scale Everest during Nepal’s mountaineering season, which began this week and runs through May. Last year’s season was canceled after 16 local guides were killed in an avalanche in April.

The sun light reflecting off glaciers cooks the compost much quicker than a composting toilet. They fly the waste out a few times a year.

He's used as a "marker" by other climbers. He's been identified but he's referred to as "Green Boots".

It brings me to tears that a body can be displayed with such disregard for dignity and respect. This was a person, with family and friends. So sad that we can sit and discuss the attire without a thought to the person that was!

why weren't they already doing this pack it in, pack it out practice. I mean, how long has that been an established practice (in the US at least)?

we "pack it in and pack it out" like others on this thread have noted. Must be Republican climbers leaving parts of themselves behind.. just kidding, ok not really.

That was one of Sen. Inhofe's thoughts on why people can't cause global warming. He says humans do not have the power to alter God's creation.

One thing I never got was, back in the day climbing Everest was considered a remarkable feat, and headlines blared someone's success.
But no one mentioned the Sherpa guides and packers who went up the mountain along with the headlined "hero".
