Nobel Peace prize chairman removed

Source: France 24

OSLO (AFP) -
The controversial head of Norway's Nobel Peace Prize committee was removed Tuesday and demoted to the rank of mere member in an unprecedented move.

Thorbjoern Jagland, a former Norwegian premier, drew criticism after becoming committee chairman in 2009 for awarding the prestigious Nobel to newly elected US President Barack Obama. He will be replaced by current Deputy Chair Kaci Kullmann Five.

The way that excerpt is worded, it sort of sounds like he simply gave the medal by himself. If it's a committee, I would have assumed that it would have taken some sort of vote among the members to decide who gets a given medal, and that, at best, the 'head' is a tie-breaker.

No-No - Thats her name - Kaci-Kullman five - she is a conservative - but she is a splendid politician who do know her way around the halls of government - she had many offices back in the 1980s and 1990s - even though she kind of retired in the middle of the 1990s.....

But I think this have more with trying to make up to the PRC, who after the Nobel institute gave a Chinese Dissent the prize - was rather insulted by it - and the official China have been rather cold to the official Norway after the nobel institute gave the prize to a dissent who have been a thorn in the side of the official China.. Because he wanted more democracy and openness in the socitity... How horrible that is And they took it as an personal insult too boot...

Mr Jageland is a good politician - pron to end up in word salads - but if he is able to sort out his salads good politician who like to work behind the scenes rather than in public - where he tend to be little on the weird side of things.... Not a loose cannon, but he kind of have a loss of words - and then the words salads tend to came out.. He can't be that bad - as he was a Prime minister for a period - and was doing a fairly good work as prime minister - not as splendid as Gro Harlem Brundtland, who was a giant and properly one of the best prime-ministers Norway have had in modern times - just Beaten by Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen - both from the Labor Party by the way - But even then a good prime minister at a time when Norway was in need of a good prime minister to keep everything together..

Tuesday's action raised also questions of whether the Nobel committee - which has been awarding the peace prize almost every year since 1901 - would begin to show more political colour.

Traditionally its five members are appointed by parliament but claim total independence in their decision making.

Mr Jagland's demotion reflects a shift into a majority of committee members nominated by right-wing parties, which won Norway's 2013 general election.

"This can be interpreted as an attempt by the rightist government to exert more political control over the committee than has been customary," Nobel Peace Prize historian Asle Sveen said.
...
"This introduces a new principle by which we associate the chair of the Nobel Committee with the new majority's political colour," wrote Harald Stanghelle, editor of daily newspaper Aftenposten.

I doubt it wil go right-wing - as most conservatives in Norway tend to be verry midle of the road, compared to many other nations - and Kaci Fullman Five have allways been seen as a woman who want compromise rather than other means.. When she held high offices in conservative governments in the 1980s and 1990s she worked closely with the oppositon, and was willing to compromise when needed....

But of course, the Nobel comitee wil be more conservative now than it was before - Im not sure how that would settle things in the comitee - but I doubt somehow it wil be mutch difference from what it is today - even if it wil have a little leaning to the right...

Or.........Obama is going to get another Peace Prize. The Chair stepped down so another Chair can present Obama with his second Prize.

See how easy that is?

I agree with the title line; but, I think the body has it backwards ... The Chair stepped down so another Chair WON'T present President Obama with his second Prize for his work in the Ukraine (prudence, rather than rushing in full bore) and the Iran negotiations (seeking diplomacy versus military solutions).
