After the flap over bigoted blog posts, Nebraska Board of Education members might require written disclaimers on their personal communication.

Under a policy up for approval Friday, board members would put disclaimers on electronic and written communication indicating that the content is their personal opinion — not the board’s. The intent is to make sure that when board members blog, write newspaper columns, tweet or post to Facebook, the public knows they are speaking as individuals.

Lillie Larsen, who leads the board’s policy committee, said the change would clarify a policy first adopted in 1979. That policy already requires members to state when they are speaking on their own behalf.

The board became engulfed in a firestorm last month over the controversial blog posts.
