Sen. Bob Menendez: 'I Am Not Going Anywhere'

Source: CNN

0225 GMT (1025 HKT) March 7, 2015

Washington (CNN)The Justice Department is preparing to bring criminal corruption charges against Sen. Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, alleging he used his Senate office to push the business interests of a Democratic donor and friend in exchange for gifts.

People briefed on the case say Attorney General Eric Holder has signed off on prosecutors' request to proceed with charges, CNN first reported. An announcement could come within weeks. Prosecutors are under pressure in part because of the statute of limitation on some of the allegations.

Menendez told reporters Friday night he has "always conducted myself appropriately and in accordance with the law."

He added: "And I am not going anywhere."

...there's some "there" there. Not looking good for Menendez, and it couldn't happen to a more worthy DINO who appears to want to become the Senate's next Joe Lieberman.

When Memendez is removed from office Chris Christie will be certain to put a GOPer in that seat. Hopefully Democrats can put up a good candidate to take the seat back in 2016.

I wonder which Democrat would run for Senator Menendez' seat and can win it.

Sources familiar with the probe say the Justice Department’s Public Integrity unit, which prosecutes federal officials, along with the FBI have cast a wide net, looking at his public actions even before he first came to Congress as a House member in 1993. Menendez was appointed to the Senate in 2006, and won reelection in 2012. In his 2006 and 2012 races, Menendez faced scrutiny over whether he improperly used his office to help his allies.

...

The charges imperil the career of the powerful New Jersey Democrat, who has emerged as a prominent Democratic skeptic of the White House’s dealings with Iran and Cuba.

In 2009 and 2012, Menendez intervened with top officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — the agency that oversees the Medicare program — about a CMS ruling that Melgen had overbilled the Medicare program by nearly $9 million. Melgen has repaid those funds. FBI agents and investigators from the Department of Health and Human Services have searched the Florida ophthalmologist’s offices twice as part of the probe.

Other actions by Menendez have also come under scrutiny. He contacted the State and Commerce departments for help in pressuring the Dominican Republic’s government to honor a contract with a port security company owned by Melgen. The senator had traveled repeatedly on Melgen’s private plane, and Menendez was forced to repay $70,000 from his own pocket for some unreported flights after they came to light.

.... Bob. I'm pretty sure you will. And whether you are eventually convicted or not, lobbying CMS to improve reimbursement for your personal friend and benefactor STINKS ON ICE and you can deflect all you want, it is CORRUPTION.

15. The entire political system is based on making nice to rich ppl for money.

When it costs a billion dollars to get elected president, and millions to get into the Senate, politicians have to grovel to rich bankers and businessmen to get elected and do nice things for them once in office. What morally significant difference is there between that and taking gifts to push someone's business interests? The only difference is that campaign funding is for the campaign, and bribes are for the politician personally. But getting elected is itself a personal purpose.

Disclaimer: I am not defending Bob Menendez, Democrats, Republicans or crooks in general. My point is that the system itself is corrupt and tends to corrupt everyone who participates in it.
