McConnell: 'We'll Figure Some Way' To Raise Debt Ceiling

Source: TPM

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Sunday indicated that Republicans would pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling before the U.S. defaults on its national debt on March 15.

"I made it very clear after the November election that we're certainly not going to shut down the government or default on the national debt," McConnell said on CBS' "Face the Nation" when asked if Republicans would lift the debt ceiling.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday called on Congress to raise the debt ceiling "without controversy or brinksmanship" before the March 15 deadline.

McConnell did not promise, however, that Republicans would not use the debt limit increase to achieve additional policy goals. "We'll figure some way to handle that and hopefully it might carry some other important legislation that we can agree on in connection with it," McConnell said of the debt limit increase.

That should be mentioned in every article about their threat to do it.

"$24 billion.

That’s according to an estimate from Standard & Poor’s. The financial services company said the shutdown, which ended with a deal late Wednesday night after 16 days, took $24 billion out of the U.S. economy, and reduced projected fourth-quarter GDP growth from 3 percent to 2.4 percent."

if the House (let's be honest here...if the Tea Party) plays the same games with a GOP-controlled Senate that they played with Reid, you're going to see the RNC come out loaded for a intra-party bloodbath in the 2016 primaries.

Something I learned in college all those years I went to CPAC as a CR (and a stealth liberal)...the GOP keeps names of people inside the tent that don't march in lock-step; they are willing to shank their own for fomenting insurrection and harming the GOP brand or GOP plan.

No matter who wins that fight...it's good for us.

but I also know that the M$M will carry their water and spin the tangled web of GOP chaos into golden threads of bullshit in order to put the blame on Obama.

Pretty simple really, just put clean legislation out there without all the political stunts and you can have it done in less than half a day.

Plan to use it as a bargaining chip is not the same as what you state as they would pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling before the u.s. defaults on its national debt on march 15

WTF is he talking about. Other than going to war, and creating more of a police state, when, in the last 5 years, has there been bipartisan agreement on anything important? So, in reality, this is just another Repug lie. They will try to load this up with something they want and Dems don't and it won't work - once again.

When will they ever learn?
