A Mississippi sheriffs deputy was fired after making racist threats against another gamer while playing Xbox Live.
The other gamer, identified only as David, posted a YouTube video of his exchange with former Jackson County Sheriffs Deputy Michael Slater.
He encountered another gamer making racist statements on the gaming systems voice chat and decided to provoke him.
I asked him if he wanted to buy food stamps as a random troll, David told the Free Thought Project. He then blurted some racial words and I told him he sucked at the game.

(31,849 posts)I suspect that the LE Officer is African-American ... so the N-word being tossed out is not racist ... just stupid.

(19,926 posts)I hear that word a little bit when playing xbox online (I play rarely and not war games, just a zombie game, well and now a racing game where hardly anyone speaks) and it sounds like white people saying it.

(31,849 posts)BTW ... I read a study, years ago, that concluded that 90+ of PoC can recognize/identify race by linguistic profiling (hearing vocal cues); whereas, the number drops off sharply with white folks, but still accurately enough to affect decision making..
Here is an article on it (but not the study I was referencing): http://news.wustl.edu/news/Pages/6500.aspx

(19,926 posts)I agree that you can tell the race of a person a lot of the time by their voice. Sad about the racism that follows based on that study.

(31,849 posts)I was involved in a Housing Discrimination case. The defense was arguing that the housing provider could not have possible discriminating against the Black housing seeker, because she did not know or even see the housing seeker ... it was a jury trial.
We pretty much replicated the study for the jury, using 20 different voices (including that of the housing seeker) ... the jury awarded a 6-figure judgment.

(19,926 posts)It's astounding how long the hatred can be perpetuated.

(128,772 posts)I listened to a good chunk of the audio on the video at the link and because the cop was from Mississippi, you get a southern accent in there that is often heard from both black or white southerners. His initial diatribe was more like what you might hear from whites (or any other racial/ethnic group) who live in predominantly black neighborhoods. They pick up the prevailing cadence and slang of the area (same goes for blacks in predominantly white neighborhoods). But then the cop also used the term "dude" which is a word that whites use far more than blacks, and as the conversation continued, he sounded more and more white as the slang dropped away. The cop is youngish though.

(31,849 posts)too many N-words, for my taste.

(128,772 posts)It was WAY over the top. The type of bravado nonsense that goes on over gaming network chats, is ridiculous. It's like a juvenile version of playing the dozens.

(6,241 posts)Glad Jackson county has been able to divest itself of one bad egg. He probably wasn't the only one.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)but I don't want people who allow themselves to be drawn into stupid online bravado fights at all, especially not to the point where one voluntarily divulges information like that so easily because of ego. Someone like that has no business being in law enforcement. I can only imagine what he would act like on the street with someone who doesn't immediately comply or dares ask him a question. I can see it escalating to a shooting with an ego like that.

(6,241 posts)that thinks they get paid to beat people up has a fundamental misunderstanding of their role as a peace officer.
