Pat Robertson: Quit your job if you work with Buddhists so you dont get infected by it

Christian Broadcasting Network host Pat Robertson told viewers on Monday that Buddhism was like a disease and that Christians could get infected if their coworkers practiced it.
I work in an environment where all of my coworkers are Buddhists, a viewer named Tina explained in an email to Robertson. They talk about Buddhism all day long and try to preach to me. It didnt matter much to be before, but since I recommitted myself to Jesus a year ago, it has started to bother me a lot.
Robertson replied by noting that healthy people might not contract a mild contagion.
But if you put yourself in the middle of a hospital ward where everybody has the disease except you, sooner or later, you will be infected by it, the TV preacher warned. If youre in the middle of hundreds and hundreds of people who believe that way, youve got an uphill fight.
And I think your best thing at that point is to withdraw with dignity, Robertson said. Get out of that environment because theyre going to get to you before you get to them.

Yeah, stay away from those Buddhists because, if they are sincere practitioners you might get infected with some respect, compassion, tolerance, clarity, wisdom, appropriate behavior, true empathy, benefit, etc.
I also question the "preach to me" aspect of that question. Buddhism does not tend to be proselytized in the way that many "religions" are. Plus, there is a lot of philosophy, exploration and analysis to be found in the wide spectrum of Buddhist thinking. So, the petitioner's question is vague and possibly coming from feeling estranged and "different" as well as the usual insecurity of being in a situation where your overly does not meet or match the rest.
I can't help but notice how alienating the idea of "they're going to get to you before you get to them" sounds, as well as an invitation to confrontation. So, let's keep that us and them mentality going so the donations keep coming. How loving.
When ir Rome?

(35,015 posts)Odd that Robertson would say such a thing at this period in time; he must think Buddhism is on the rise. I'm cool with that! And it's not really a religion, even though there are rules an rituals, there is no central diety or dieties. Many forms of Buddhism too.

(2,331 posts)He took me to his temple, where there was a lot of chanting, which I found off putting. He also wasn't a vegetarian, as many Buddhists are. So if he was trying to convert me it failed spectacularly.

(90,202 posts)...here in the US for some reason. The practitioners I've known have been really into positive thinking, so that may have something to do with it. There's a heavy emphasis on ritual and the chanting of particular sutras or mantras. There is also the cult of personality around the leader of Soka, who has amassed amazing wealth.
They are not my cup of tea.
The Buddhists who are in my life are generally attracted to the writings of Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama and their followers. There's much more emphasis on quiet meditation and learning to change your own life. These leaders do not live in the most expensive personal real estate in Tokyo, or anywhere else, unless you consider Dharamsala, which is part of a government-in-exile as well as everything else.
This sketch is kind of off the top of my head, but you can learn more from Wikipedia and other links.

amazing, two of my best friends are buddhists, and I am pretty sure they have not "infected" me with anything other than love and friendship.

(1,730 posts)rather than Christians who have anything to do with Robertson. If more Christians practiced with values followed by Buddhists, this world would be a much nicer place to live.

(19,114 posts)I personally know a guy who was infected, and flew into a rage of peace and tranquility, not attacking everyone who walked by while he violently meditated on the meaning of life as he glared at a butterfly that landed on a flower nearby.
It was a horrific thing to witness, and I still have nightmares about it to this day.

Have some monkey in a truck throw in random lines from Pat's past diatribes and boom, 700 Club TV baby.

(35,357 posts)Yes, all you fucking annoying, pain-in-the-ass, always-preaching Christians should leave your jobs immediately if there's a Buddhist around.
Heck, even if there's not one, you should quit any way and leave the non-believers alone!

Change out the word Buddhist for Christian and this brain damaged freak would scream bloody murder and yet not see that they are exactly the same stupid narrow minded brain dead comment.
