10 members, associates of reputed crime family arrested
DAVID PORTER, Associated Press | March 12, 2015 | Updated: March 12, 2015 6:54pm

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Reputed members of a New Jersey crime family long believed to be the model for HBO's "Sopranos" plotted to kill a recalcitrant member who, they told an undercover informant, was "out of control" and had to "meet death," federal prosecutors alleged in a criminal complaint released Thursday.

Three criminal complaints name 10 reputed members or associates of the DeCavalcante crime family, including 71-year-old Charles Stango of Henderson, Nevada, believed to be a capo, or captain, in the family. The arrests were the fruits of more than three years of work by an undercover agent who was able to infiltrate the family and gain the confidence of Stango and others, according to the complaints.

The complaints charge the 10 with a litany of crimes including conspiracy to distribute cocaine, promoting prostitution and purchasing 120,000 untaxed cigarettes.

Stango, who purportedly went by the nickname "Beeps," was charged with two other men, 72-year-old Frank Nigro and 68-year-old Paul Colella, both of Toms River, with scheming to kill the unidentified victim over a dispute regarding the victim's being promoted as a "made" member of the family. Colella purportedly was known by the nickname "Knuckles."

FBI arrests 10, dealing blow to N.J. mob family that inspired 'The Sopranos'

Ten members and associates of the notorious organized crime family that inspired "The Sopranos" were arrested today and charged in various plots to commit murder, distribute drugs, smuggle untaxed cigarettes, and run a prostitution business.

Federal authorities previously have called the DeCavalcante organization one of La Cosa Nostra’s most ruthless families. It operates in North Jersey under the Gambino family, one of the five major crime families based in New York, according to the FBI.

Since 2012, an undercover agent has posed as a DeCavalcante associate, operating a “crew” that paid tribute monies to mob capo Charles “Beeps” Stango, according to court papers.

Shortly before Christmas last year, Stango met with the undercover agent in Las Vegas to discuss killing a “made member” of the family known as “the Pet.” The meeting was surreptitiously recorded. "The Pet," who was not otherwise named in the federal complaint, had disrespected an acting boss of the DeCavalcante clan called “the Horse” at a social gathering.

And this article, written in 2004, doesn't even go into Jebba-the-Hutt and his erstwhile business partners, Colombian launderer Alberto Duque and Cuban-American Medicare fraudster Miguel Racarrey. Recarrey, in fact, authored the biggest fraud ever inflicted upon Medicare until Rick Scott.

And not to be underestimated, unfortunately, because as charmless and clumsy as he is, the Bushes will probably stop at nothing to get him elected. Watch for all kinds of embarrassing revelations about the other GOP contenders (or, conversely, numerous unexpected withdrawals from the nomination race à la Romney), and, as Campaign 2016 approaches, a sudden run-up in oil prices and, of course, the Bushes' specialty: the October Surprise (think USS Cole or something like it to make Democrats look "weak on national security matters&quot .

You have to wonder why Florida has been the home of so many Medicare scams, and politicians so wrapped up in frauds of all kinds.

Jeb Bush Lobbied On Behalf Of Infamous Medicare Swindler, Says Former HHS Secretary
Posted: 01/31/2012 2:08 pm EST Updated: 01/31/2012 2:08 pm EST

WASHINGTON -- Jeb Bush personally lobbied the secretary of health and human services while his father was vice president on behalf of a hospital executive who would later be accused of defrauding the government of hundreds of millions of Medicare dollars, The Huffington Post has confirmed.

Miguel Recarey, head of International Medical Centers (IMC), also paid Bush $75,000 in the mid-1980s, money that Bush acknowledges receiving but says was tendered for real estate consultation.

With the GOP presidential campaign now focused on Tuesday's Florida primary, attention has turned to Jeb Bush, the popular former Florida governor, as observers analyze his every move for signs of a possible endorsement -- or wonder whether Bush himself will wind up the nominee after a brokered political convention.

In 1992, as his father, President George H.W. Bush, ran for reelection, Jeb Bush denied having reached out to HHS Secretary Margaret Heckler on Recarey's behalf, a denial he maintains through a spokeswoman to this day. Bush said that he only spoke to a lower-level HHS official to ask that Recarey be given a "fair hearing" with regard to his application to renew a waiver that allowed IMC to receive more than 50 percent of its revenue from Medicare. (The waiver had been granted as part of an HMO pilot project that was set to expire. The renewal was ultimately not granted.)

But now former Secretary Heckler herself, in an interview with HuffPost, has confirmed that Jeb Bush lobbied her, that she was in favor of renewing the waiver (although she left office before doing so) and that his input played a major role in her thinking.

Toms River brothel, murder planned by mob: FBI
Kathleen Hopkins, @Khopkinsapp 11:09 p.m. EDT March 12, 2015

NEWARK – Two alleged members of the DeCavalcante crime family were looking for a remote location in Toms River to run a high-end brothel, under the guise of a private club hawking drinks for wounded warriors, authorities said.
FBI agents, who foiled the plan on Thursday, also put the brakes on a murder-for-hire plot in Elizabeth and struck a blow to the crime family's New Jersey cocaine business. They arrested 10 alleged members or associates of the crime family, including three Toms River men and a Brick man, according to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

Anthony Stango, 33, of Brick, and his father, Charles Stango, 71, of Henderson, Nevada, were arrested and charged with conspiring with the crime family's New Jersey crew to run a prostitution business in Toms River and distribute cocaine, authorities said.

In addition, Charles Stango, described by authorities as a "capo" or captain in the crime family, and Toms River residents Frank Nigro, 72, and Paul Colella, 68, were charged with plotting to kill a rival gang member in Elizabeth, according to the news release.

The FBI agents also arrested Mario Galli, 23, of Toms River and charged him with cocaine distribution, the news release said.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, Anthony Stango, also known as "Whitey," met with Galli, two unnamed women and an undercover agent at an unnamed bar in Toms River on Feb. 10 and told the agent of his plans to operate a high-end escort service targeting white-collar businessmen and professionals.

NEWARK — Ten members and associates of the New Jersey-based DeCavalcante organized crime family were arrested today on charges of running a prostitution business, trafficking in drugs and plotting to kill a rival gang member.

All ten defendants are expected to appear this afternoon in the courtroom of U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Falk.

Among them are Charles Stango, 71, of Henderson, Nev.; Frank Nigro, 72, and Paul Colella, 68, both of Toms River.

Federal prosecutors say Stango, alleged to be a captain in the DeCavalcante family, sought permission from Nigro, the family's alleged consigliere, to kill a rival member living in New Jersey.
