KOLKATA, India (AP) Police say a nun in her 70s was gang-raped by a group of bandits when she tried to prevent them from committing a robbery in a Christian missionary school in eastern India.
The attack early Saturday is the latest crime to focus attention on the scourge of sexual violence in India.
A police officer says the nun was hospitalized in serious condition after the attack, which was committed by seven to eight robbers at the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in West Bengal states Nadia district.
The officer says police are searching for the bandits, who escaped with some cash, a mobile phone, a laptop computer and a camera belonging to the school. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

(29,322 posts)To even torture someone is outrageous as well as those with who standby and let it happen but this is as worst as it gets & the victim, good chance she'll spend the remainder of her life suffering & coping with trauma of this. Just one of the cruelest things in so many ways.
I don't understand the mindset, I understand power explanation & it fits but I still don't get it & the collective mindset there. Not one of them drew a line? I wouldn't wish the pain & trauma on my worst enemy but to give someone one of their most painful memories of their lifetime. Don't care or they do know which is why they did it. I don't get it.
Watched a documentary on immigration from El Salvador, a lot of mass immigration on top of trains -- a human rights activist out there helping to do it safely, reported this sort of crime rate is sky high -- those who want to get away with it still have to live with themselves which is why only the sociopath of the worst kind is the only way I can imagine but the truth may surprise me. I know torture can be done is the torturer feels it is justified as well as those facilitating & supporting it. One of the worst memories to have if not the first.

(17,086 posts)It happens everywhere, right? Seems like only India gets scrutinized at the same level we should be looking at our own society.

(60,536 posts)If that thought were correct, do you think the Associated Press, Reuters and other wire services would report about it? Or, do you think those wire services only report on it because they know there exists an audience for this news at DU?

(17,086 posts)Don't the news services carry reports of rape in other countries? Or are they the ones who focus on India and shape our view of one of the most populous countries on the planet as a place where only rape happens? I just find it curious and tiresome to focus on one country for this ubiquitous crime. Maybe I just notice it more for some reason - I don't know.

(60,536 posts)tourists, school girls, Indian women and, obviously, nuns. In general, the incidents of rape are not conducted by a single criminal, but rather, like the nun in the above story, the victims are gang raped.
