US government approves Dallas club's rhino import permit
| March 26, 2015 | Updated: March 26, 2015 2:48pm

DALLAS (AP) — The U.S. government will allow a Texas man to import the carcass of an endangered black rhinoceros he hopes to kill in Africa as part of a conservation fundraiser.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Thursday that importing the carcass from Namibia meets criteria of benefiting the conservation of the species. The hunter, Corey Knowlton, bid $350,000 at an auction last year that the Dallas Safari Club billed as a fundraising effort to save the black rhino.

But the agency also is allowing Michael Luzich, a Las Vegas investment manager, to import his sport-hunted black rhino trophy to the U.S. Namibia directly sold him a hunting permit.

Human Society chief executive Wayne Pacelle says the federal agency is sending a "mixed message," noting rhino poaching is on the rise.

WTF? Another case of up is down and killing endangered species is conservation.

I don't care how much frigging money people "donate" to the "cause" of (slaughtering) endangered/threatened wildlife, it is still slaughter and USFWS should tell this murderer he cannot bring in an endangered animal from Africa dead or alive. Period.

I have already seen that Dept. of Agrichemicals is operated by revolving door Big Agribusiness/Big Chemical; EPA operated by same along with Big Oil/Timber/Mining; FDA operated by Big Pharma; now we see FWS is operated by NRA/hunting enthusiasts. Obama needs to put his exec. branch house in order. This is disgusting.

money to save an endangered species by allowing someone to kill one of the endangered animals you say you are trying to save.

if he wanted to.

Obviously, he doesn't care if an endangered Black Rhino is slaughtered with the approval of his Fish and Wildlife Service.

I wonder what his daughters think of his approving the killing of an innocent endangered Black Rhino, and then bringing the carcass back into the US as a trophy?

I guess he isn't an animal lover.

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't voted for him twice.

Older rhinos, like the one that's already been selected for this hunt, prevent younger male rhinos from mating, even when the older one can no longer reproduce. Removing the older one allows for more reproductive chances for the species.

While the optics of this look bad and distasteful, i.e. killing an endangered species!!!!, it really is a conservation effort.
