Trevor Noah To Replace Jon Stewart As The New 'Daily Show' Host
Source: Huffington Post
"The Daily Show" finally has its new host: Trevor Noah.
Noah, a South African comedian and one of the newest "Daily Show" correspondents, was mentioned Friday as the front-runner to replace Jon Stewart on the Comedy Central show. On Monday, The New York Times reported that Noah would officially take over hosting.
Since Stewart announced in February that he'd be stepping down from the show after hosting for over 15 years, a handful of possible replacements have been considered. Lists of the potential next host have included Jason Jones, Samantha Bee, Tina Fey and Jessica Williams, who said she was under-qualified for the position.
Noah is a new name to many people because he is one of the most recent additions to the Comedy Central show, having joined in December 2014. Since then, he has appeared in only three segments with Stewart, including ones about Ebola, Boko Haram and a game of chess.

(128,734 posts)His "teasing" of the guests as he introduced them in the opening segment, went for the jugular in terms of appearance and innuendo about their backgrounds (apparently based on who they were... and since I had no idea who they were, I can't comment on how close to the mark his darts were outside of what they looked like). I recall a bit of his comment about the large guy, who he dubbed a "beach ball", and with the black guest he remarked about not knowing which was darker, the "skin or the lips"... or something like that (I think she had dark or black lipstick on). I know Comedy Central (and any number of comedy hows and routines) can sometimes go deep down into rough, but I expect it will be interesting to see how he plays to American audiences with his acerbic wit (it's much more than what we've seen with Martin Bashir, notably since the guy is a comedian)...

(128,734 posts)But my comment stands, particularly given that "The Daily Show" is geared towards political commentary and satire and how his style will play to American audiences.

(11,936 posts)Thats not his "style". If you watch any of his regular stand up, you'd see that he is all about political and social commentary, particularly his having grown up in apartheid era South Africa with a white father and black mother.
The only reason he is saying things like that in this particular video is because its a roast and thats the kind of jokes people make at roasts. Its not a reflection of his normal routine. Given that its an obvious roast from the very beginning (they say as much several times in the video), I'm not sure why you would even pretend thats his "style", knowing that a roast has a unique nature to it (where the point is to openly insult people) as a comedy event.
The guy speaks 6 different languages, can do just about any accent you can think of and has an interesting life experience to pull from.

(128,734 posts)about his background. John Oliver subbed for Stewart in the off-season. Again, as I said, it will be interesting to see how he plays to the American audience given his acerbic style.

(36,437 posts)"Uh, like John Stewart?"
"Dammit!"
really strong accent that I have a hard time understanding him.
And, what I do understand, just not "funny" to me.
Jones is the closest to Stewart in style, Bee and Williams are sharp enough, imo ...
Just not going to be the same regardless.
Stewart is the smartest, sharpest and toughest guy at cutting through bullshit by far since this country started allowing itself to be full led around by its nose by republicans the last quarter century.
Not sure what Jones is doing, but I suspect if this is the way it goes, they will probably go for a lifeline for him in a year or so.

(4,238 posts)I was so hoping Aasif Mandvi would get it. At least he's funny. This guy has been on three times and I found him to be just "meh" each time. I know Stewart leaves some huge shoes to fill, but I don't think this guy will even come close.

(3,051 posts)I suppose he thinks he was being funny, but the repetition of anti-Jewish canards is not a great start.
It's becoming "cool" to hate Jews again. I lived through the Nazis. I'd hoped I'd die before that came around.

(29,225 posts)Under the banner of siding with Palestinians... that's well and good, but there's a line there where it becomes anti-Jewish and some folks don't seem to see that.
