Wilco Cancels Indiana Concert Over 'Thinly Disguised Legal Discrimination'

Source: TPM

The alternative rock band Wilco on Monday slammed Indiana's new anti-gay "religious freedom" bill as "thinly disguised legal discrimination" in a tweet announcing that an upcoming concert in the state was canceled.

WILCO ✔ @Wilco

We're canceling our 5/7 show in Indianapolis. “Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act” feels like thinly disguised legal discrimination.

4:30 PM - 30 Mar 2015

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy has been outspoken about LGBT rights in the past. Tweedy, a Chicago-area native, wrote a letter to his local newspaper in 2013 to urge Illinois residents to support passing same-sex marriage legislation.

Indiana officials over the weekend scrambled to contain the fallout from the newly enacted law, which critics say would protect business owners who refuse to serve gay couples because of religious objections. Top Republican lawmakers in the state said Monday that they plan to push for an amendment "clarifying" that the bill doesn't allow for discrimination.

is to say that it doesn't say what it does say. They said what they meant in the first place. Now they are trying to back peddle and claim that what they meant was not what they meant.

Dress, or some other thing such as past behavior, bouncing checks, etc., you're OK. But you can't single out an entire class of people. That's what makes it discrimination. So, you can't say that you're going to deny service to adults under five feet tall -- unless height is some kind of a safety issue.

We, in Indiana are practicing a great American tradition that when a minority gets too uppity, it becomes necessary that we have to enact certain laws and ordinances. In no way does this condone bigotry in any way, shape, or form. There. It was written down, therefore it is true. The ‘Religious Freedom’ bill does not discriminate. This bill simply states that a business owner or person can deny services or goods to people they object to on religious grounds as a practice of their sincere belief. This denial of goods or services shall cover all people, regardless of class, race, color, sex, creed, and especially, GLBT. So, as you can very well see, this law does not discriminate against anyone because it is the state of Indiana’s sincere religious belief.

since we all know the true reason is to punish those uppity gays for winning the marriage debate, it would be nice if these bigoted pieces of shit would just answer EXACTLY WHAT THE LAW IS FOR
