Obama vetoes Republican bid to block union election rules
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday vetoed a measure by Republicans in Congress that would have blocked a government labor agency's rules designed to speed up the time it takes to unionize workers.
The rules would shorten the period between a union filing a petition to represent workers and an election, from the current median of 38 days to as little as 14 days. Employers would be required to share workers' names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses with unions.
The National Labor Relations Board adopted the rules last year and they are set to take effect April 14.
The Senate and House of Representatives, voting along party lines, approved a resolution this month that would have stopped enactment of the rules.

(24,683 posts)The decimation of the TAFT-HARTLEY ACT is now under attack------yeah----- this is just the start, and the next presidential election will very important that we elect someone who will keep this agency NLRB and NMB in the hands of the workers and not the union busting right wing right to work for less discrimination tactics that have been going on since good old Ronald Reagan was bought and sold to the highest bidder and his platitudes of hypocrisy

(26,223 posts)having an opinion is much like having an asshole......everyone has one and no two are exactly alike.
But anyway back onto this I think he made the correct call in vetoing it and hopefully he will be more willing to use his veto power to stop the republicans from finishing their job of destroying the country.

(34,582 posts)as the law would be pressuring the unions to get things done in too short of a time.

The IAM submitted 60% signature cards...the company's paid anti-union contractor, is in full press "BOO!" campaign to get the vote to fail.
Time will tell.

(86 posts)If the phrase "inequality of bargaining power" means anything to you, you know that the only bargaining power for employees is that of being a union member.

(11,619 posts)a little note I want to slip under the scags door. They slither over here
to check the status of us crazys. You know who I mean.
And I just want to say to you..in consideration of the working men and
women that toe the line both on the job and participating in Union Activities,
You aren't worth pissing on if suddenly your conservative asses were to burst
into flames. In olden days..someone stole a family's horse, and was caught,
were hung. Seems appropriate, without the horse..no transportation..no
crops planted..noway to get the kids into the doc..
I see no differences between horse thieves and the republicans.

(160 posts)Other than signing the Lily Ledbetter Act into law, this President has done next to nothing for organized labor. It is my opinion that Hilda Solis resigned as Secretary of Labor because she was hamstrung and couldn't carry out all the reforms she wanted to. We have a huge problem with worker misclassification and wage theft here in Florida. We in the Central Florida Building Trades met with her or her assistants on several occasions and I always got the impression that they wanted to do more to rectify the problem, but nothing ever came of all those meetings.
