With debate looming, Trump has huge lead in new poll

Source: Politico

The identities of the 10 Republicans likely to be on stage at Thursday’s presidential debate are coming into focus after another poll on Monday shows Donald Trump running away from the rest of the field and Rick Perry lagging behind his competitors for the final spot.

A new Monmouth University poll has Trump at 26 percent, easily topping his competitors. The next-closest candidates — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker — are at 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

...

The Monmouth poll has New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 4 percent, Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 3 percent and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 2 percent. That puts Christie and Kasich in a tie for ninth place in the average, at 3.4 percent — ahead of Perry, who is at 2.8 percent.

It’s not clear whether there will be any new polling between now and Tuesday afternoon, Fox News’ deadline for making the cut. The network won’t comment about its plans, but it seems likely they may release their own poll. Perry, however, would likely need to significantly outperform either Christie or Kasich in any subsequent surveys to steal a place on the stage.

Looks like Perry is done.

2. Ridiculous as it seems, Trump might actually get the nomination.

I thought Reagan would never get the Republican nomination, because it was ridiculous. A B-movie actor? But look what happened. And we are still living with the damage.

6. Yes

never say never ....

He's rising by Xenophobic trade platform and blaming other candidates

He has no political record as baggage, so people ignore that aspect of him

Could he rise to the presidency by pointing fingers and never being
critically examined himself?

7. Reagan had been governor of California and hadn't acted in decades, really

This whole mystification, as if Reagan was in Bedtime for Bonzo, then immediately became President, is a bit silly. Reagan was a formidable politician long before he got the nomination. He damn near was nominated in 1976, too.

As much as Reagan was a horrible conservative ideologue, Donald Trump is no Ronald Reagan. I mean, honestly.

8. I agree,

but it does bring in mind a lazy Sunday afternoon when I turned on the TV shortly after the inauguration and heard the announcer speaking over the end credits of a movie:

"Now stay tuned for Cattle Queen of Montana, starring the President of the United States".

9. You sound like a Reagan fan.

Is that your point? That after being a movie actor and TV commercial announcer for almost 30 years, he was qualified to be Governor, and therefore to later be President?

Lots of strange people get elected Governor of California, including the Terminator.

12. If you think Reagan quit acting when he left Hollywood you didn't pay much attention to

his Presidency. I would guess well over 75% of his "Presidency" was scripted for him. Probably more like 100% in the second term, at least until he became too weak minded to follow a script.

You do know Trump had a TV show don't you. The similarities are closer than you think

And your defense of Reagan has been noted.

18. Wow, its been "noted"!

Chilling! Someone points out Reagan was a governor and that means they are "defending" him. I'll point out he was also president of a major union. Please "note" that also on your list.

21. Keep defending him, but his presidency of the screen actors guild has long been

know to be much like his Presidency, just a figurehead.

You should know about the people you admire and defend.

19. How much of this is just name recognition?

There are a lot of stoopid people out there. I doubt many of them have taken the time to look at and find out about all the candidates.

Then again, Jeb is well known, and he's behind Trump. I don't get it.

23. One third name recognition, one third sheer displeasure with the other candidates, one third racism

and xenophobia.

Trump gets a lot of support from those who frown at Bush and Christie because they just let the President enjoy a free pass on the key issues of his Kenyan birth, his Muslim faith, his plan to invade Texas, and his history of palling around with terrorists.

I know there isn't much to say about the other clowns, but I think Trump will quickly become a joke once the debates start because he can't control himself and will look goofy.

24. I suspect that Perry, Walker, Huckabee, Santorum, Carson, and the other privately say what Trump

says publicly.

I suspect that at Thursday's debate, at least three candidates will say something stupider than the dumbest thing Trump says.

In the meantime, Trump will continue to be a useful idiot for them.
