Angry opponents of N.C. amendment call for moving Democratic convention from Charlotte

Source: Charlotte Observer

North Carolina voters have spoken. Now it’s other people’s turn. And, around the country, many of them are so mad at Tuesday’s results on Amendment One that they’re calling for the Democratic National Convention to be yanked out of Charlotte.

By 1:15 p.m., nearly 20,000 people had signed a “move the convention” petition that was launched on change.org by the New York-based Gay Marriage USA.

And Twitter is filled with similar sentiment from angry supporters of same-sex marriage.

“As an LGBT Democrat married in Iowa, I wouldn’t set foot in North Carolina,” tweeted David S. Shafer.

Marc St. Jacques tweeted: “Move the Convention out of North Carolina, don’t spend any monies in this retrograde state.”

No one expects the Democrats to move the September convention out of Charlotte – where the Amendment lost.

Meck has been blue since 2004. Give this county the credit it's due.

I do understand, and the power of the dollar is mighty, but isn't there a way to create some cognitive dissonance, show people they are out of touch, show a united front.

Seeger sang, "All You Fascists are Bound to Lose". But I don't believe it will change without all the effort of those who are working hard to change things. Friends of the cause will be impressed by the speeches and the convention stuff, and change will happen for some, but this seems like a great opportunity for outreach from inside the enemy camp, amplify the effect.

(Brainstorming: you just throw ideas out, no criticism or evaluation, just production of tactics that can be tossed or refined, depending on the strategy. Beat up on mine, that's ok, but not on others, ok?).

Everyone at the convention in nothing but glittered clothing - kinda stereotypical, but glitter is a tactic being used a bit
Preachers could preach against bigotry that week, maybe start a yard sign campaign to encourage appreciation of others.
Get some school kids to draw pictures of a world where hate doesn't exist and post them all over the convention halls.
(getting kids on your side to carry a message is a very useful tactic).

Do you have ideas, especially with some humor or something that would draw media, given that the convention will more than likely be held there? I ask, because this place has all sorts of ideas, viewpoints, and smart people.

btw, I am sure there will be other demonstrations. I wonder if those could be leveraged, both for and against...

There are some good thoughts here pro and con about moving the Democratic convention from NC, but they are all moot points. The Democrats would first need to evolve into a party with a spine. Yes, there are a few, but mostly they whine and cave in to the Limbocans.

10. The DNC should be like Oprah in Amarillo, TX

Remember when the Cattlemen's Industry sued Oprah for saying that she would never eat a hamburger again when she saw/heard about mad cow disease? Well, their headquarters was in Amarillo, Tx at the time. And my extremely liberal Uncle lived there then, much to his chagrine. He said that she moved there and rented a ranch, her people visited the town and supported it, she was very positive and upbeat the entire time and filmed her show from there. In other words, she "bombed them with butter" and the people loved her...even though it is a very conservative town. As you may know, she won because, yes, we do have freedom of speech here in this country. So they should try and do the same there.
