CNN / ORC Poll: Trump tops in Iowa as Scott Walker drops

Source: CNN

Donald Trump has a significant lead in the race to win over likely Iowa caucus-goers, according to the first CNN/ORC poll in the state this cycle.

Trump tops the field with 22% and is the candidate seen as best able to handle top issues including the economy, illegal immigration and terrorism. He's most cited as the one with the best chance of winning the general election, and, by a wide margin, as the candidate most likely to change the way things work in Washington.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson follows Trump in overall preference with 14%, bumping Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who had held the top spot in most recent public polling in Iowa, down to third place with 9%. Walker is nearly even with a slew of other candidates.

Previous public polls had found Carson with around 10% support, but most were released before last week's debate. A Suffolk University poll of Iowa Republicans released Tuesday found Carson's closing remarks to be the most memorable moment for those who watched the prime time debate.

Of the "establishment" candidates who I think are most likely to win the nomination (Bush, Walker, Rubio, Kasich), Walker is the most malignant so I'm glad to see him fall.

1. Not sure what an ORC poll is, except

if they are polling GOPers it's fair to say that they are actually polling orcs.

16. And crickets on every channel for Bernie.

You know the media is corrupt when they cover trump 24/7, but can't give 30 seconds to Bernie Sanders.

17. I hear you...CNN is a dolled up, more traditional propaganda version of Fox.

At some point Sanders is going to hate the mass and corporate media as much as Clinton, if he is not already there....this ignoring and then distorting of Sanders popularity in speaking to the issues people outside The Beltway want to hear is a criminal act of media negligence.

Sanders and Clinton have 90+% in common on almost all issues, hate of the lying puppet and propaganda plaything of the .01% controlled mass media is one of them I think.

Making common cause on the issues is better than making common personality attacks.

7. I keep predicting this, but no one believes me.

Carson's going to be on the ticket. Probably at the top, but maybe VP.

8. Howard Dean made a strong run. Carson's background is ideological polar opposite but the details are

similar.

I am waiting for one of the candidates to say he plans to offer the surgeon general position to Carson (as a backhanded compliment).

18. Yes. Because they are racist enough

to believe that if they pick an accomplished black man, minority voters won't care what he stands for.

And minority votes are what they are lacking.

20. You are talking strategy, I'm talking reality.

White trash won't vote for no (fill-in-the-black). The vast majority of the Republiscam Party are under-educated, dentally-challenged, alcohol-infused morons. But that's what's interesting about electoral politics - watching what really happens.

10. If Trump wants to take Walker out

all he has to do at the next debate is inquire how he can invest in Walker. After all, $350,000 in campaign donations returned $400 million to an NBA franchise. A few investments like that, and Trump wouldn't have to declare bankruptcy so often.

13. They crunched a bunch of numbers at the 538 blog and concluded Walker was the biggest loser:

Losers

Scott Walker: This one surprised me a little, but the polling is clear. Walker is the only candidate who lost ground in every single post-debate poll. In Iowa, where Walker had been leading, just 5 percent of voters said his performance was the most impressive of all the candidates. Walker’s debate night was bad enough that he has lost his edge in Iowa to Trump.

19. Not comparing the candidates by any means, but both ends of the spectrum are in play.

People are really, really fed up with the status quo...the Republican's Clown Car and the Democratic Inevitable One.

If it were a fluke, we would not see it at both ends. It's likely a groundswell that is just beginning. I think Bernie is riding the wave, because of his political experience and maturity.
