Video captures Sacramento County deputy beating prone suspect with flashlight

Sacramento County sheriffs Deputy Paul Scotte Pfeifer has been hailed as a hero cop.
The 14-year veteran has won numerous awards in his career, including the departments highest honor the Sheriffs Gold Medal of Valor for helping save a baby from a three-day hostage situation on Arden Way.
He has been lauded for bravery, honored by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and the Carmichael Elks Lodge for helping address the transient problem in the area, feted by the Sacramento chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and recognized by the California Peace Officers Association.
He also has been accused in court of using excessive force at least three times since 2009, each time over his use of a flashlight as a weapon, and captured on video in two separate incidents beating a suspect with a long, metal flashlight. Video of one of those incidents began circulating in December. The Sacramento Bee this month obtained exclusive video of the second incident shot from the dashboard cameras of two patrol cars.

(17,644 posts)So now he is in "Plain clothes" and less likely to be caught beating people with department issued flashlights

(1,432 posts)and the man didn't deserve any of what he got. But he's also foolish for even approaching the officer. Stay the fuck away from all cops at whatever cost. If they're blocking an intersection, try to find another way around. It's a shame things are the way they are, but that is reality. Any confrontation with an officer can go wrong at the drop of a hat. They are a volatile bunch for sure!

(47,260 posts)that is caught on tape, I often wonder how many confrontations like this happen where there is no video documentation.

(2,382 posts)... if that ratio was a thousand to one. My stepson is a detective in a nearby county, and that shit is a daily occurrence that draws lots of "ATTABOYS!" in the locker room. Sick fucks.

(47,260 posts)Body cameras would be an important first step to changing the violent culture of police in this country. Then lots of ongoing training and evaluations.

(47,260 posts)Those in law enforcement should be held to a higher standard than the average citizen and penalties should be harsher, not more lenient. It should be an understanding when someone chooses a profession as a police officer.

(22,651 posts)When will they start to fire police and charge them with torture and assault?

(1,210 posts)watching this and seeing the depravity of the officer against the man. We are living in a world where some cops think they themselves are king and above the law. These cops need no excuses to stop and assault because they know they can give any bogus excuse after the fact.
Thank god that the guy was able to film this and get it out to the media. As others have said how many such incidents are happening that are not filmed. Of course, filming cops is now a danger to the person filming, which is so wrong in and of itself.

(2,397 posts)Fair Oaks & Landis? Holy crap! I used to live on Engle-just west of Fair Oaks, and East of Walnut which is 2 or 3
blocks from Landis. Well we can now welcome Sac. Co. sheriffs office to the elite scumbag cop club. My gawd. Who is responsible for hiring this moron?
