Up to 10 dead in shootings at Umpqua Community College in Ore. (EDITED)
Source: KOMO
ROSEBURG, Ore. Seven to 10 people are dead after a shooting incident at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., according to the Oregon State Police.
More than 20 other people are reported to be injured.
A school official says shots were fired at Snyder Hall around 10:30 a.m. The official said the school was locked down.
People are being asked to stay away from the campus.
A Douglas County, Ore., official has told CNN that the shooter is now in custody.

(Updated with more detailed link. Thanks Tripper11)
(Updated again because KOMO had the numbers wrong - it said that the state police confimed 15 dead but it seems like it is only a slightly less devastating number...)

(915 posts)the charge to stop gun violence? I don't see them ever doing anything but hold their guns tightly and say the mantra 'that won't work' and other bullshit proposals and delay tactics. The one I truly despise is when the NRA chairman says that 'victim's are too emotional' and then himself starts to go crazy when anyone talks about gun control saying the idiotic argument that 'we want to take their guns away'.
No one will change the gun owner's mind. It's about money and politics and fear.

This an argument that goes round and round and never stops ..
I personally own guns I personally would not be willing to voluntarily give them up, I have done nothing wrong... no sense in even discussing this anywhere on this board, has been tried and run down several times, not even sure why I am at this time.. they all point fingers at one another and go round and round about it ... nothing ever gets done...

(5,376 posts)Except for the daughter's birth part, of course. I found it to be a community rife with "rednecks" whose far right mindset was 'way over the top for me, since even back then I was a die-hard liberal. Sounds like it's not much different now, as I see their sheriff had vowed not to enforce the background check laws Oregon's legislature just passed. Probably even this awful event in his county will not serve to change his mind. Residents pretty much held environmentalists in contempt, as timber was Roseburg's economic base, evidenced by the clearcutting in the nearby forests, greatly impacting the beauty of the area. If you google "The Roseburg Blast" you'll read about a huge explosion that wiped out much of the downtown in 1959, had nothing to do with their right-wing policies, but an interesting story nonetheless. They also once had what they called "weather-predicting goats" grazing on a surrounding hillside, pretty much bereft of foliage, may or may not have been the result of all that logging.
My spouse's job landed us in Roseburg, but we didn't stay long, moving north to Eugene, that hotbed of liberalism. Liked that lots better! I feel terrible about the tragic events of yesterday, doubly so since I have a grandson attending an Oregon community college in another town, and can definitely relate to the horror and aftermath of the shootings.
This is probably more than you wanted to know, but thank you for asking and for reading my answer, if you made it through all my words.

Since the December 2012 shooting in Newtown, CT, there have been at least 142 school shootings in America an average of nearly one a week. How many more before our leaders pass common-sense laws to prevent gun violence and save lives?
Communities all over the country live in fear of gun violence. Thats unacceptable. We should feel secure in sending our children to school comforted by the knowledge that theyre safe.

All the questions you want will be asked in the actual presidential election debates, although as repeated polls and past elections indicate, gun control is still politically disadvantageous for Democrats in competitive states. (570 posts)This has hit waaaaaayyy close to home. I'm am so very sad about it. I also have to say that the public safety department at my community college has taken extra-ordinary measures to try to keep us safe. They did presentations at all this fall's instructor in-services. I'm so grateful that they have strategized responses and taken the time to communicate them to the faculty. As part of the process, they analyzed other campus shootings, including Virginia tech where the shooter chained the outside handles of the doors together so people couldn't get out of the building. As a result, my campus has removed one of the outside handles on every entrance to a building, so they can't be chained. I'm horrified that we have to take these steps and know it won't be getting any better any time soon.

Now I'm just sick for all those families who felt the same way and found out it was one of their loved ones who was killed. I don't know how serious the injured are. I hope the death toll doesn't rise on this.
I don't understand how conversations like the 4chan with anonymous posters can go on without some kind of alert to the FBI or something to try to apprehend this before it happens. Even if it's just a threat and won't be followed through, we need a way to try to stop these events if they are being discussed on-line. And what about those who were in the convo who were saying don't do it? Why didn't they alert someone? This just makes no sense to me. And to think there are so many young men out there who encourage this stuff...it's just sickening.
I did some target practice when I was a kid and loved it. Now I hate guns. I hate the sound of guns and there is a place where people go shooting close enough to me I can hear them in the distance. Of course it's almost (or already is) hunting season here, so everyone is out there practicing...I am not against hunters or hunting (I don't like it, but can accept it) but it's getting to the point that the sound of a gun is just so ugly to me that it's affecting my ability to be rational about it.
