Turkey 'intercepts' Russian jet violating its air space

Source: AFP

Ankara (AFP) - Turkey said on Monday its F-16 jets had at the weekend intercepted a Russian fighter plane which violated Turkish air space near the Syrian border, forcing the aircraft to turn back.

Turkey summoned the Russian ambassador in Ankara to the foreign ministry and "strongly protested" the violation, the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

It demanded that "any such violation not be repeated," otherwise Russia "will be responsible for any undesired incident that may occur."

The Russian jet infringed Turkish airspace at 12:08 pm (0908 GMT) on Saturday south of the Yayladagi region in Turkey's southern Hatay province, according to the foreign ministry.

I thought there'd be trouble between Russia and Turkey, I just didn't think it would start so soon

There's a new sheriff in town, and he doesn't think much of you. Nor does the rest of the world, with the possible (but unlikely) exception of the US State Dept., which is known to be clinically insane.

and NATO will defend Turkey against Russia.
And I can tell you from personal experience that those Turkish fighter jocks are tough, professional, well trained pilots and would be more than a match for Russian pilots.

Of course, there's some dispute whether Kurds are Turks, or people, as I understand it over there...

Two Turkish jets harassed by unidentified MIG-29 aircraft on Syrian border: Army

ANKARA (AFP) - Two Turkish F-16 jets were harassed by an unidentified MIG-29 aircraft on the Syrian border a day after a Russian fighter plane violated Turkish airspace, the military said on Monday (Oct 5).

"Two F-16 jets were harassed by a MIG-29 plane - whose nationality could not be identified - for a total of five minutes and 40 seconds," the army said in a statement, saying the incident took place on Sunday.

Turkey said earlier its F-16 jets had on Saturday intercepted a Russian fighter plane which violated Turkish air space near the Syrian border, forcing the aircraft to turn back.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday warned that Ankara would activate military rules of engagement irrespective of who violates its air space.

The planes Russia sent to Syria were Su-30's, SU-25's and bombers. The MIG-29 is a common aircraft in the Syrian air force though, and it's one they've used throughout the civil war.

10. Russian Military Delegation Comes Israel to Discuss Syria With IDF Officials
Tue Oct 6, 2015, 12:07 PM
Oct 2015

REUTERS - A senior Russian military delegation will visit Israel on Tuesday for two days of talks on how the countries can avoid accidentally clashing while operating in Syria, an Israeli military officer said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Sept. 21 to set up teams as Moscow steps up military support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, who has been losing ground to an Islamist-led insurgency.

Israel is worried the Russian deployment, which includes advanced anti-aircraft units and warplanes, risks pitting Russian forces against its own over Syria.

Israel has attacked Syrian armed forces and arch-foe Lebanese Hezbollah, a Damascus ally, during the four-year civil war in its hostile neighbor. It has said it holds the Syrian government responsible for any spillover of violence.

Once is accidental, twice is intentional.
