US officials: Russian missiles heading for Syria landed in Iran
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN)A number of cruise missiles launched from a Russian ship and aimed at targets in Syria have crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.
Monitoring by U.S. military and intelligence assets has concluded that at least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran. One official said there may be casualties, but another official said this is not yet known.
It's unclear where in Iran the missiles landed. The Russian ships have been positioned in the south Caspian Sea, meaning the likely flight path for missiles into Syria would cross over both Iran and Iraq.
The Russians have been firing a relatively new cruise missile called "Kaliber," using it for the first time in combat.
Iran's semi-official FARS news agency, however, said that neither Russian nor Iranian authorities have confirmed the U.S. officials' information at this point.
On Wednesday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin on Russian television that all 26 missiles launched from four missile ships struck their targets, with no civilian facilities hit. Putin then congratulated him on the performance of the weapons.
It was not clear, however, whether Shoigu was referring to the same missiles as the U.S. officials, as the latter may have been describing ones launched after the TV appearance.
The assessment came as Defense Secretary Ashton Carter warned Thursday at NATO headquarters in Brussels that Russia would likely suffer casualties "within the coming days" as it deepens its military involvement in Syria.

So much for the pinpoint accuracy Putin was telling us yesterday I guess

(6,699 posts)Just like for the U.S., Palestine is a weapons testing laboratory for the U.S. Police control gas, non-lethal bullets, etc. Iraq and Afghanistan have been fertile ground to test and advance our military weaponry.
Russia is playing "catch up". They have to test out their new products and stay in the lucrative weapon export business as well. Some need tweaking and some need to be discarded. This is a big piece of Russian and American involvement in wars all around the world. We don't give them weapons for free because they are "special". We give them weapons "to test out".
Amen
Weapons need to be tested in real world conditions...and these conflicts are good places to do that.

(11,841 posts)Those night vision scenes we are so used to seeing; I have noticed several times the explosion being a good bit away from the crosshair of the laser painting.
Unless there's some other reason; I'm no expert on it. Just seems as though when we see videos of US strikes, it hits where the crosshair is aiming.

So 4 out of 26 crash...about a 12% failure rate...pretty good for Russian stuff.

Yes. Thankyou, Cough, BBC.

So, one Iranian news agency, Irna, did report "that an unknown flying object had crashed."
However, the two Iranian quotes you chose to use were:
1) - The Fars News Agency, ("thought to have close affiliations with Iran's Revolutionary Guards" is the news agency which claimed that: "Western media and officials have launched an all-out assault against Moscow."
2) - "...But conservative Iranian media described the reports of missiles landing in Iran as
'psychological operations by the U.S. against Moscow."
As far as your other quote from the BBC article:
"Russia's defense ministry also denied the reports..".
What did you expect?
Dis you expect Putin to ADMIT that 4 of the 26 Cruise missiles fired from Russian warships stationed nearly 1,000 miles away MAY have accidentally crashed in Iran?

It should come as no surprise that Putin's "Defense Ministry also denied the reports."
Putin always denies anything that might make him or Russia look bad.
He's still "denying" that any Russian soldiers are in eastern Ukraine.
He's still denying that either Russian soldiers or Russian-backed fighters shot down the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, killing 298 civilians, a year ago.

Was there anything in that BBC article that was incorrect

(36,418 posts)It's exactly what you would expect with a new Russian missile. Much of their systems are technologically 15-25 years behind, have less development (the Russians haven't been in nearly as many wars), and cost far, far less than U.S. counterparts. But still, 80 percent is pretty good, all things considered.
