BP schools adopt policy that transgender students may dress, use restrooms based on gender identity

The Bellevue Public Schools have adopted rules on how it will handle situations involving locker rooms, dress codes, bathrooms and privacy for transgender students.

The rules will guide district teachers and staff on how to best support transgender students and their families.

Bellevue is the first big metro-Omaha school district to adopt a written policy specifically regarding transgender students.

The rules state that transgender students have a right to dress, use restrooms and participate in P.E. classes in accordance with their gender identity. They have a right to be addressed by the name and pronoun with which they identify, the rules say.
