Labour: TPPA could encourage 'land-banking'
Source: 3news.co.nz
Labour's "non-negotiable" conditions for the signing of the treaty include ensuring Pharmac is protected, the country has the right to restrict farm sales and housing to non-resident buyers , the Treaty of Waitangi is upheld and making corporations cannot sue the Government for implementing regulations made in the public's interest.
Labour says it is vitally important the TPPA does not go ahead if it means the Government forfeits its right to stop foreign property investors buying multiple properties, what it called "land-banking".
The party claims up to 15,000 houses are being kept empty throughout the country, due to the practice and says it might not be possible to stop it under the terms of the TPPA.

Interesting stand from New Zealand's Labour party, it makes me wonder what our "non-negotiable" conditions are for the treaty here at home.

All the public gets are tid bits of this "deal" and its not pretty------------------these "negotiators".
I just wonder how they sleep at night knowing that they are going to hurt people, animals, hurt everything on this planet with this "deal", like food, water, air, everything-------------just to make money---------amazing

(2,208 posts)Or do other countries seem to know more about the TPPA contents then we do? Is it disseminated to politicians and officials in government? Or are these officials firing warning shots about what protections and conditions they would demand to have included to get their support?

(24,695 posts)just last week on the Thom Hartmann radio show he had Defazio from Oregon was on, but they were talking about the murders there, and then as a side note they discussed the TPP and Defazio said it was still "Classified", he can't release anything on paper on what is in this "deal", because Fromn (USTR) has more power than the public and transparency.
The MSM in this country has completely dropped the ball on this issue, this very important issue, and other important issues, just like MSNBC / Comcast/ NBC, they have a vested interest in this "deal" , a big interest, they were in the back ground writing this "deal" up just like the drug companies, they aren't going to say anything or report anything about it.
And has Hartmann said, ever since Reagan attacked the Fairness Doctrine and started the process to eliminate it from and for the public good, and it was signed off by Clinton we get nothing in the news------------------------except bloviating shows looking for ratings like the Duggars or TMZ------------I mean really.
We have a Congress that is on another vacation, only works from Tuesday through Thursday and then there jet off to wherever, and we sped millions for a three day work week and them not being in Washington over 145 or more days now----------- amazing.
And not one MSM is saying like hey folks this is what is in the "deal", what is it really going to do, and by the way this is how many days the republicans have called to order to do the business to keep this country going----------we don't hear it------------amazing
These other countries are letting the public know, because the media is investigating this stuff or "deal" and they want the public to know and they are not happy, even when they these negotiators and heads of government go merrily on there way, and have ear plugs in there ears and don't hear anything, except for the greed from the oligarchies-------------its amazing
I mean
We in this country have to wait -------------------why.

(2,208 posts)My guess is that when posts are made close together in time, as my four were this morning, that the DU site's software doesn't update post count instantly.
Oh, And I hope you noticed that THIS post about the TPP addressed the NZ Labour party's legitimate concerns over the TPPA.
Thanks.
I am completely opposed to these corporate coups masquerading as trade agreements.
They are much more dangerous to democracy, sovereignty and the idea of self-government than people realize.
They will almost wipe out the progress we have made since 1776 in a lot of areas.
I hope people wake up to just how bad they really are.

(2,208 posts)I share your hope that people will wake up and stop swallowing everything the corporate media feeds it. The TPPA has provisions that are so regressive in empowering corporations above and beyond any reasonable trade agreement, that it makes my head spin.
I have no idea why so many US officials are pushing it and I am especially perplexed why so many democrats are.

(101,306 posts)Look at ancient posts of your own (anywhere on DU3, anyway - DU2 numbers were 'frozen') and they'll say '52,419' (or a few more if you post again before you see this).
