Rep. Keith Ellison hands Sen. Bernie Sanders his second congressional endorsement
Source: MSNBC
Sen. Bernie Sanders will get a pre-debate boost from Rep. Keith Ellison, the co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who will become the second member of Congress to endorse Sanders insurgent presidential campaign Monday, he told MSNBC.
Im endorsing Bernie because he is talking about the issues that are important to American families, Ellison told MSNBC in an email via his spokesperson. His candidacy is important for many reasons, but I believe the most important part of his candidacy is that it has the ability to create a renaissance in voter participation, which was at its lowest in decades this past election cycle. Weve all seen the massive crowds he is attracting, and I think that is a testament to his message connecting with people - people we will need to turn out in November.
(snip)
Bernie and I have stood together on progressive values for years, Ellison added. Bernie was a founder of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and as one of the current co-chairs, we have a shared desire to help Americans who are struggling to get by.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) presidential campaign on Monday, saying he was doing so as "a matter of conscience."
Ellison is a co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which Sanders helped co-found as a member of the House of Representatives in 1991. Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), the caucus' other co-chair, endorsed Sanders -- the only senator to have ever joined the group -- last week.
"Bernie is really generating a lot of enthusiasm for civic participation," Ellison told The Huffington Post, which he pointed out is especially important after the historically low turnout during last year's midterm elections.
"We are in need of a civic renaissance in America and Bernie is generating a lot of excitement and energy among young people, old people, all kinds of people, and I think that is really critical," he added. "The manner in which he is moving his campaign forward is healthy for our democracy."

Thank you, Keith Ellison of Minnesota, for the rationale of endorsing our next President of the United States.
I am positive that there are more endorsements going his way, plus Clinton's old supporters will be switching shortly after the debates tomorrow. (at least the early endorsers before they even knew Bernie was viable)

But I do note that a lot of Bernie's ideas are very much also those of Elizabeth Warren, who has a woman would make a good running mate. Keith has an advantage in being from the Midwest. That would be good for the ticket. Elizabeth Warren of course, like Bernie is from the Northeast. Usually tickets try to represent diverse parts of the country.

(19,537 posts)They would have a hard time either labeling them as Jews, Muslims, or even "godless" socialists then! The name calling would be harder for them to make work then!
Perhaps such a ticket would help us push the discussion beyond just the pejorative labeling and have more constructive dialogue on details of what some policies of progressive democratic socialism would give our country!

Really well moderated sewer. They are calling Bernie supporters, which means at least 85% of DU members by their own admission, BernieBaggers among other nice things. And that's nothing compared to what I've seen in the now locked forums. Endless personal attacks on individual DUers and also Bernie, of course, like this anti-Semitic POS that was deleted:

(31,232 posts)In presidential primaries, endorsements have been among the best predictors of which candidates will succeed and which will fail. So were keeping track.
UPDATED 3:04 p.m. EDT | October 12
In the 2016 election cycle, the Democratic and Republican races look very different. Hillary Clinton had a commanding lead in endorsements even before launching her campaign to an extent thats unprecedented for a non-incumbent Democrat. But Republican insiders have been slow to rally behind a candidate.
Of course, not all endorsements are equally valuable. We use a simple weighting system: 10 points for governors, 5 points for U.S. senators and 1 point for U.S. representatives (there are roughly five times as many representatives as senators and 10 times as many representatives as governors).
