As the presidential debate season intensifies, small-business owners are pessimistic about the business climate and feel America is on the wrong track, according to a new survey.
The wide-ranging survey, "Opinions of Small Employers," from the conservative-leaning National Federation of Independent Business released Monday found nearly 70 percent of small-business owners believe the overall U.S. business climate is fair or poor. What's more, six years out of the Great Recession, 63 percent of those polled said the country is on the wrong track. The NFIB surveyed 500 business owners with up to 250 employees.
"Small-business owners just aren't convinced that things are headed in the right direction," said Holly Wade, director of research at the NFIB. The survey was conducted during the second quarter of this year.
The report comes as optimism among small businesses is holding steady, but still lingering below historical averages. The NFIB's Small Business Optimism Index for September, released separately Tuesday, found confidence edged up slightly to 96.1 last month. But fewer business owners expect strong sales.

That is the mark of a developed and civilized country: when there is a prosperous middle class with disposable income.

Maybe it's time for a change!

(34,845 posts)It's that too many are competing for the same piece of pie. There are only so many economic resources that can be claimed for one's own just as there can be too many mom-and-pop restaurants in one area.
If there was one thing that would alleviate 80% of our country's problems, it would be to reduce our population.

(13,593 posts)In other words, just another RW push poll. I agree, of course, with the "not headed in right direction" part. If you read the whole piece, though, you'll see the usual "ideas for fixing things:" Lower taxes on the rich, slash government domestic spending, restrict workers' rights, etc.

(111,253 posts)and they're all going to howl about that one. They will be wailing, gnashing, wringing, and threatening to go out of business up until it happens. Six months later, they'll be basking in so much higher sales figures that none of them will ever try to organize a rollback.
Funny how that works.

(509 posts)The RCP poll shows 63% of the public feel we are on the wrong track. Small businesses are your friends and neighbors working around you. I don't care what Warren Buffet, Jamie Dimon or others of that ilk say, I listen to the guys trying to make it day by day to provide goods and services to their neighbors.
With real unemployment/underemployment at 10% still nationally, as quoted by Bernie from the unemployment report, we just are not going in the right direction.
I blame most of this on the lack of economic focus on the Cabinet personnel selected by the President. President Clinton hired exceptional personnel for his cabinet, discounting Les Aspin. It seems the President selected for a general orientation towards how things should be, not on the abilities and skills of his advisers.
