Toyota recalls 6.5 million vehicles for window switch defect

Source: AP

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 6.5 million vehicles worldwide for a defective power window switch that can overheat, melt and lead to fires.

One injury in the U.S., a person who suffered a burn on the hand, has been reported related to the defect.

The Japanese automaker said in an email Wednesday that the recall includes 2.7 million vehicles in North America, 1.2 million in Europe and 600,000 in Japan. It involves the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra and other models.

Toyota said the defect was caused by grease which was sprayed on improperly during the manufacturing of electrical contact modules.

I follow the KISS principal. All those conveniences like not having to change gears or move your arm to wind down the window are just failure points. The last automatic transmission I bought was 1977 and it just barely got past warranty before it blew up. My manual transmissions got just as much if not more abuse and never failed.

VW can't meet emissions standards. GM and other corporations have killed people with their cars and we bailed them out to do this to us.

Let's stop funding our own demise.

My 07 Camry was recalled months ago for this problem. The problem comes from customers trying to lubricate the stuck switch themselves with flammable WD40. The fix with the correct lubricant only takes the dealer a few minutes.
