Entire Florida police department busted for laundering millions for international drug cartels

The village of Bal Harbour, population 2,513, may have a tiny footprint on the northern tip of Miami Beach, but its police department had grand aspirations of going after international drug traffickers, and making a few million dollars while they were at it.

The Bal Harbour PD and the Glades County Sheriff’s Office set up a giant money laundering scheme with the purported goal of busting drug cartels and stemming the surge of drug dealing going on in the area. But it all fell apart when federal investigators and the Miami-Herald found strange things going on.

The two-year operation, which took in more than $55 million from criminal groups, resulted in zero arrests but netted $2.4 million for the police posing as money launderers. Members of the 12-person task force traveled far and wide to carry out their deals, from Los Angeles to New York to Puerto Rico.

“They were like bank robbers with badges,” said Dennis Fitzgerald, an attorney and former Drug Enforcement Administration agent who taught undercover tactics for the U.S. State Department. “It had no law enforcement objective. The objective was to make money.”

The War on Drugs is the real scheme that should be investigated.

Putting ones self above the needs of the many is so prevalent these days, and nowhere more so than in our supposed defenders who instead of fighting for peace, fight for a piece.

cops, I believe they love to get paid and they can murder too, since courts always believe they are innocent. Cops are human, not God are they pretend to be.

It's going to happen. It always does. It repeats.

I can't wait to get the next Reich-wing email about cops protecting, and not there to kiss my ass. I (with a dozen others on the distribution) got one months ago with that theme. Did a "Reply-all" and said, "I guess someone never saw 'Serpico'."

This time its cops, not accountants, or bankers, or housewives, or lottery winners, or stock brokers. Money corrupts, end of story. The only sparkle comes from the fact its a law enforcement agency this time and not someone that we've heard about before (not that it hasn't happened to law enforcement before. I'm sure it has).

Money corrupts every single day in every profession. Haters gonna hate regardless....

How'd I do?

a small town police dept does not have national jurisdiction and sooner or later someone would ask where the money came from.

They were bold.

you know, Chicago or NYPD, or CIA, or HSBC or Citigroup, or something like that. Something with room enough to hide the doings. Something too big to fail and too reputable to besmirch.
