MEXICO CITY The mayor of a city south of Mexico's capital was shot to death on Saturday, less than a day after taking office, officials said.
Gunmen burst into the house of Mayor Gisela Mota in the city of and killed her, said the government of Morelos state, where Temixco is located. Two presumed assailants were killed and two others detained, said Morelos Gov. Graco Ramirez in the government statement. Officials attributed her killing to organized crime.
Mota's leftist Democratic Revolution Party released a statement describing her as "a strong and brave woman who on taking office as mayor, declared that her fight against crime would be frontal and direct."
Temixco is a city of about 100,000 people neighboring Cuernavaca, a resort and industrial city which has been suffering kidnappings and extortion linked to organized crime groups. Though Cuernavaca is the state capital of Morelos, Temixco is the seat of several state institutions including the Public Security Commission, which coordinates state and local police forces. Morelos also neighbors drug cartel-plagued Guerrero state. Mota, who had been a federal congresswoman, was sworn into office on New Year's Day. She was killed the following day.

(1,859 posts)I was just thinking of all those stories of the drug cartel in the desert killing people - specifically all the musicians they've slaughtered right across the boarder, as well as politicians.
you'd think the mexican government could monitor the deserts via satellite and send drones to take out the bad guys before they slay innocent people.
That carson thought of it pretty much invalidates it for me though. That guy is nuts and fascist.

(1,859 posts)With our politicized right this is not far away. Also, our country's drug policies are causing Mexico's problems and it's looking like that here with drug crime violence in a lot of cities - Phoenix, AZ is the kidnapping capital of the world because of drug cartels.

(31,986 posts)That was debunked years ago. The police were making false reports to get millions in federal anti-crime money. Arizona has a very broad definition of kidnapping. In 2008 police claimed there were 668 kidnapping cases. It turns out there were only 18 cases of classical kidnapping.

Mourners have turned out in large numbers following the murder of Mexico City mayor Gisela Mota who was gunned down at home by four attackers just one day after taking office.
Two of her alleged attackers have been killed and two more arrested according to a statement by local police.
Several mayors were killed last year in Mexico where armed gangs funded by the drugs trade control many local communities.
Mota, a former federal member of Congress, belonged to the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution.

The newly installed mayor of a small town in Mexico was murdered one day after assuming office. Gisela Mota was killed in her home on January 2, becoming the latest victim in Mexico ongoing fight against drug gangs.
Date 02.01.2016
The Mexican city of Temixco, located about 100 kilometers south of Mexico City (60 miles), became the latest crime scene in Mexico's ongoing war on the drugs trade.
State Governor Graco Ramirez confirmed the murder in a tweet, calling the attack against a "young and widely beloved partner" a provocation by criminals, which his party would not give into.
Gisela Mota had only taken office with the start of the new year on January 1. A former federal member of Congress, Mota belonged to the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PDR), a leftist movement.
The Mexican newspaper "El Universal" reported that four armed gunmen had attacked Mota at her home.

AP
MEXICO CITY Three people, including a minor, were being held Sunday in the slaying of a newly inaugurated mayor in a gang-troubled central Mexican city.
Morelos Gov. Graco Ramirez ordered flags on state buildings flown at half-staff and called for three days of mourning following the murder of Temixco Mayor Gisela Mota.
He blamed organized crime for killing the 33-year-old Mota, a former federal congresswoman who had been sworn in as mayor less than a day before she was gunned down in her home Saturday morning. Ramirez ordered security measures for all of the states mayors, though he gave no details on what that involved.
Following Motas killing, two suspects were killed in a clash with police and three others arrested. Officials said they include a 32-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and the minor. They gave few other details, though state Attorney General Javier Perez Duron said they had been tied to other crimes.
