Armed group calls meeting to talk with Oregon community
Updated 11:29 pm, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The armed activists occupying a national wildlife refuge in southeastern Oregon said Tuesday that they plan to hold a community meeting this week to explain themselves and inform residents when they will leave.
A member of the anti-government group told reporters that the meeting will be held Friday evening in Burns, 30 miles from the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, The Oregonian newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1RK65f6 ).
Arizona rancher Robert "LaVoy" Finicum said the location has yet to be determined. He said "there should be a dialogue" but declined to give any specifics about the group's exit plans.
. . .
Ammon Bundy, the group's leader, has previously said the group would not leave until a plan was in place to turn over federal lands to local authorities. They also want the release of Dwight and Steven Hammond, father-and-son ranchers convicted of arson who returned to prison last week to serve longer sentences.

Really odd things is I have some friends who are facebook bombing about the urgent need to send supplies to those wonderful patriots fighting the feds in eastern OR so there are some people buying in to this drama. Hope this ends soon so we can all tune back in to the political presidential campaign implosion we got going on!

(2,406 posts)... communicate their manifesto or political jibberish with impunity?
Why haven't the police (1) cut off the power and the water, (2) canceled the landline and internet connections, (3) blocked the perpetrators' cell phone plans, (4) blocked anyone from entering the compound, and (5) arrested anyone trying to leave?
What are the police doing?

(22,000 posts)The police are taking a sit back and wait approach hoping they'll get tired and cold and go home. While I don't support violence or confrontation, I do think some of those things you mentioned could put additional pressure on them.
I'm almost positive that there is technology to jam cell phones in a specific area. However if they were going to do that, as you said, they'd have to limit people from coming in and out.
Another fun possibility (though it would damage the building most likely) is to get one of those aircraft that drop water on fires and just fucking douse them with something. Sewer water would be my first choice.

(57,936 posts)Right now, the federal government is paying the cost for maintaining the property. If the local government takes it over, say the county, won't the county have to pay for the upkeep?
Is the goal to end the bird sanctuary? I seriously doubt that the federal government is going to agree to do that.
What is the story on this?
Why do they want the property to go to the "locals," I presume the county. What difference does it make who is responsible for it?
Does the county want to do away with the bird reserve? Why? We have an Audobon park near our house. It is there for all of us. We love it. What is the story about Malheur?
Does anyone know?
I gather they are against protecting the environment, but why don't they understand how important it is to protect it? What is the problem?

(6,169 posts)They want to run cattle on the land. I highly doubt they want to keep it accessible to the public for any other reason. They don't give a rat's ass about the endangered birds or the wildlife there. And no, they don't understand how important it is to protect the environment. If they did they wouldn't be there and they wouldn't be right wing lunatics in the first place.
