Ecuador to Cooperate with Sweden to Question Julian Assange
Published 13 January 2016

Ecuador says it has always been open to cooperating with Swedish authorities to question Julian Assange in the embassy, despite delays in the process. The Ecuadorean government agreed on Wednesday to cooperate with Swedish prosecutors to question WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in Ecuador’s embassy in London, where he has sought refuge for over three years.

"We will cooperate with the Swedish justice system so they can take statements. We have said that from the beginning," Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño told media.

The statement comes after Swedish prosecutors formally requested permission from Ecuador to question Assange over rape allegations.
Patiño questioned why Swedish authorities have taken so long to act on the option of questioning Assange in the Ecuadorean embassy and added that the process will be subject to Ecuadorean law.

More back story: http://www.rte.ie/news/2016/0113/760003-assange/

Last March, Swedish prosecutors offered to question Mr Assange in London, dropping their demand that he come to Sweden.

But Ecuador refused to allow an interrogation until the two countries signed an agreement on general legal cooperation - which they finally did in December.

Swedish prosecutors dropped a sexual assault probe against Mr Assange in mid-August after the five-year statute of limitations expired.

But they still want to question him about a 2010 rape allegation, which carries a 10-year statute of limitations.
