Oregon standoff leader attends meeting, hears chants of 'go'

The leader of an armed group who took over a national wildlife refuge in southeastern Oregon weeks ago joined hundreds of area residents at a tense community meeting listening quietly as many loudly chanted at him to "go."
Ammon Bundy, who has been trying to drum up support for his cause, didn't speak at Tuesday night's meeting in Burns where residents discussed the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge which began earlier this month.
Some of the several hundred community members spoke to Bundy directly. One woman thanked him for raising awareness around issues of public lands, but told him it's time to go home to his family.
. . .
Other speakers were less congenial and at times angry and emotional in comments directed at the armed group as well as at local government officials and federal government, in part for not doing more to end the occupation.

(2,992 posts)From the article: "The group Bundy leads has said repeatedly that local people should control federal lands. Bundy has told reporters the group would leave when there was a plan in place to turn over federal lands to locals a common refrain in a decades-long fight over public lands in the West. At a Tuesday news conference, Bundy said "we're not going anywhere" until his group gets its goals accomplished."
They're obviously unwilling to just leave. It's long past time for law enforcement - I don't care whether it's local, county, state, or federal - to take these greedy criminals into custody.
I don't want to see violence, but we cannot let armed insurrectionists just take over any land they want with impunity.

(10,952 posts)right hasn't listened or would not listen to the masses if the wishes of the masses does not occur with the radical right's agenda.
Liberal and moderates in the middle have been the sane group (i.e. adults in the room). The problem with that is that the bat shit crazy crowd is learning that they can throw as many temper tantrums as they wish and there won't be any consequences. Until actions have consequences, this country will be controlled by the bat shit crazy crowd. Like it or not, Democrats have enabled them in their quest to take over this country.
Bottom line, to the radical right, Tea Party, Conservative nuts - only their views count. Everything else is of no consequence.
It is time that the adults starting acting like adults and start dealing out consequence to these idiots.
The old adage is nice guys finish last and Democrats don't seem to learn that lesson. The only consequence to Democrats/Liberals/Moderates have achieved is to embolden these idiots.

(12,022 posts)Say, fifty of them at a time? Just walked in and made themselves at home in the facilities? Spent 8 hours chattering about birds, using the kitchen, the bathrooms? And every eight hours another shift of 50 Birders would relieve them? What could the militia do? if they threatened the birders, it would be assault. If they used weapons to threaten, it would be aggravated assault. If they touched the birders, it would be battery. And all caught on body cams for future criminal trials.
I think having 50 Birders sitting in the building talking 24 hours a day about birds might drive the Bundys cuckoo.

(23,091 posts)That they have "taken over" the wildlife refuge demanding the government give all it's land to private ranchers for free proves they are lunatics, that they said they'd leave if asked, and didn't, proves them to be liars as well. Don't understand why the government doesn't at least punish them by barricading the refuse and cutting every bit of power. They are illegally stealing government resources and need to be held accountable or even worse things will happen.
