Rome's nude statues covered to spare Rouhani's blushes

Source: The Local - Italy's News in English

Hassan Rouhani visited the Capitoline Museums with premier Matteo Renzi, having signed contracts worth up to €17 billion ($18.4 billion) on Monday.

And Renzi was clearly keen to avoid offending his new business partner. The nude statues and sculptures in the museum were completely covered by large white boxes, as can be seen in the video below.

The decision to cover up nudity was seen as a mark of respect for the traditions of the Muslim country, which has only just had its trade sanctions lifted.

Shouldn't the Iranian leader be showing respect to Italian traditions, not the other way around? If the Italian leader went to Iran, would they allow the same freedoms expected in Italy in respect for Italian traditions? I very much doubt it.

Justice Department covers partially nude statues

WASHINGTON (AP) — No longer will the attorney general be photographed in front of two partially nude statues in the Great Hall of the Department of Justice.

The department spent $8,000 on blue drapes that hide the two giant, aluminum art deco statues, said spokesman Shane Hix. For aesthetic reasons, he said, the drapes were occasionally hung in front of the statues before formal events. The department used to rent the drapes, but has now purchased them and left them hanging.

why did he visit the Capitoline Museums? Arrogantly demanding concessions to cultural sensibility, while failing to reciprocate, is a defining flaw in all forms of fundamentalism. Having been to the Islamic art section of NYC's MET, I think that there were nudes in Persian art.

They speak of France rejecting the idea that the meal honoring Rouhani be halal and not include wine. Yet, I assume that if an observant Jew who was the PM of Israel were honored, the meal would be kosher and if there were wine, it would be kosher too.

This is no different than the fact that if I had a dinner for someone who was vegetarian, it would be a vegetarian meal. Just part of being a good hostess.

But it is poor manners to insist that your hosts have none either. I've yet to hear of an Israeli diplomat insisting everyon else observe kosher laws in a large catered gathering where they are the lone person who needs to.

If you had a wedding to cater for 60 guests including one vegetarian, would you deprive everyone else of meat? Particularly say in a meat-based dietary culture like Argentina? Trying to insist the French, of all people, should not have wine when they are hosting you is a bit of prime chutzpah, at the risk of offending a Muslim with that term.

My sister is a vegan. We invited her for our house for Christmas dinner. We had a vegan alternative for her, but the rest of us had turkey. We didn't demand that she eat turkey, nor did she demand that we all eat a vegan meal. Everyone had what we wanted, and there was no problems.
What the Iranians did back in November was the equivalent of my sister saying "If you want me there, then no one else can have turkey. You're all eating vegan this year."
