Tennis match-fixing claims: Review into anti-corruption

Source: BBC

Tennis officials will carry out an independent review into their anti-corruption practices after the sport was hit with claims of match-fixing.

The announcement at the Australian Open follows a BBC and BuzzFeed News investigation which revealed suspected illegal betting in tennis over the past decade.

Files showed that over the past 10 years, 16 players who have ranked in the top 50 have been repeatedly flagged to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) over suspicions they have thrown matches.

All of the players, including winners of Grand Slam titles, were allowed to continue competing.

sport, but it would be easy to throw a match in tennis and disguise the fact that you're doing it.

You can appear to be playing hard, but it's easy to just dump a few balls into the net, throw in a double fault, or put a little too much on your slice so that it sails long and no one would be the wiser. In a one-on-one sport, you have total control over whether you win or lose, so it's a lot easier to disguise than say, boxing.

I really hope none of my favorites are involved (namely Federer and Serena) but the players doing it should be banned for a year I think.

Similar to point shaving in basketball. You win but do purposely don't cover the spread.

And I agree with you. Though tennis is not my favorite sport I like Federer and Serena and it wold be very disappointing if they are involved.
