Waste dumping probed in New York town with tainted water

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is investigating possible illegal dumping of commercial waste material in a town that's already the focus of a water contamination probe.
Emily DeSantis with the state Department of Environmental Conservation says Friday that DEC police are searching woods near the main route through Hoosick Falls, near the Vermont border. She says a tipster reported the dumping of waste containing PFOA, a chemical used in making Teflon and other nonstick and stain-resistant products.
The tip came as the DEC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency investigate PFOA contamination of the public water supply in Hoosick Falls.
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics is the suspected source of the water-supply pollution. It is providing bottled water for residents and paying for a filtration system in the village.
