Over 1 million face loss of food stamps over work requirements

Source: AP

January 30, 2016 at 1:04 PM

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — More than 1 million low-income residents in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps if they fail to meet work requirements that began kicking in this month.

The rule change in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was triggered by the improving economy — specifically, falling unemployment. But it is raising concerns among the poor, social service providers and food pantry workers, who fear an influx of hungry people.

Recent experience in other states indicates that most of those affected will probably not meet the work requirements and will be cut off from food stamps.

For many people, "it means less food, less adequate nutrition. And over the span of time, that can certainly have an impact on health — and the health care system," said Dave Krepcho, president and chief executive of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

the biggest obstacle to getting over this "welfare queen" obsession of theirs is the perception that most people on assistance are minorities (particularly African-Americans, for whom Republicans seems to have a particularly sharp hatred).

In the absence of reliable child care it is difficult for women to keep their work schedules. More affluent women have more access to child care that they can afford, although it is always expensive. I view this as not only part of the war on the poor, but also the war on women.

I know someone with little money for prescriptions, no insurance except hospitalization, but a 401(k)/IRA that is the only safety net remaining (and it only has $10k, which is the only resource for a deposit on an apartment after the house gets foreclosed on), not working, but therefore too rich for medicaid but too poor for medication, especially if you're talking a few hundred a month for prescriptions only. Even if you THINK you have money, often you don't. I know the IRA might sound like a lot of money for some, but it can disappear in a hurry between deposits, moving, lawyers, and losses.

The work-for-food requirements were first enacted under the 1996 welfare reform law signed by President Bill Clinton and sponsored by then-Rep. John Kasich, who is now Ohio's governor and a Republican candidate for president.

Been ting to get disability since 2003 for social anxiety, depression, and bad knees. Basically I was only able to keep my food stamps while applying for SSD. I can't work an 8 your shift and I have trouble because of anxiety attacks. So I've fallen through the cracks basically because now SS says they can't pay me SSD or SSI because I didn't work enough in life, lost my food stamps, my meager 115 dollars a month. Thank god my parents understand my issues, otherwise I'd be on the street

No way I'm gonna go through their ridiculous program for 20 hours a week for $194 a month in food stamps. Subtract from that the $99 monthly buss pass I'd have to buy to get back and forth to the center, and that's $1.09 an hour (not counting commute time). How worth it would that be to anyone? So I'll just have to let the food stamps go bye bye.

The Koch network hired out the entire Renaissance Resort and Spa. Koch staff and security guards are stationed throughout the resort and screened cars at the front gate to prevent infiltration. The hotel has a championship golf course, a sand-beach pool, and 100,000 square feet of meeting space. Hung in the hotel lobby is a giant banner announcing the theme of the event, “A Vision to Unleash America’s Potential.”
