Former State Senator Jane Orie sentenced to prison
Source: Pittsburgh Post Gazette
Calling her actions a "flagrant and disgraceful violation" of the lawyers' oath, Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning sentenced Republican former state Sen. Jane Orie to a prison term of between 2 1/2 and 10 years on corruption charges. Ms. Orie, 50, was found guilty in March of five felonies and nine misdemeanors. The charges, which included theft of services, ethics violations, tampering with evidence and forgery, stemmed from allegations she used her legislative staff to run fundraisers and conduct campaign work. She has claimed the charges were politically motivated (Allegheny County DA Stephen Zapalla, a political adversary).

(1,593 posts)They're pretty much a political dynasty in Western PA. And, need I add, pretty much they're all meaner than junkyard dogs. General consensus was that she'd only get probation rather than incarceration, based on her lack of a criminal history and her background of public service. But she made fools out of everybody with the forged documents introduced during her first trial. I'm sure Judge Manning didn't forget that, not for one moment.

I was shocked to find out that Orie was a Republican, the amount of attention and anger toward her.
Not surprised at her actions, nor displeased with her treatment ... was nice to hear an AM talk station bashing the Repugs for a change ...

(6,699 posts)The take their Medicare and Medicaid checks with a sheepish grin on their faces, and then they complain that the country shouldn't be doing anything for their neighbor. Such hypocrites. This is what is wrong with this country...selfish, hypocritical, uneducated morons who happened to "make it" in their period of earning years in this country. Now, they want to cut the rope for anyone else, and as long as THEY are safe....screw the rest of the country.

(12,799 posts)The double jeopardy challenge was really funny.
Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning ordered those two documents and all other evidence to remain in his custody after declaring the mistrial so the evidence could be examined by both sides before a retrial scheduled to start April 11. That retrial is expected to be delayed because Orie's lawyer, William Costopoulos, told the judge he plans an appeal on double-jeopardy grounds.

One of the experts, Susan Abbey of Dallas, said one of the forged documents that prompted Manning to declare the mistrial contained "one of the worst cut-and-paste jobs" she had ever seen in her 14 years as a document and handwriting analyst.
