State Representative John Savage of East Providence is telling the Republican Party “see you later” as he changed his voter affiliation to independent over the weekend.

“I just felt that I would prefer at this point to be an independent. I think that I have been an independent thinking person in the legislature and I wanted to become the independent voter also,” Savage told the WPRO Morning News with Tara Granahan and Andrew Gobeil.

Savage, elected as a Republican to the General Assembly in 1999, said the Republican party has become too extreme for him.

“I think the republican party or a good segment of it has been capture by the extreme right, the Tea Party and I’m in disagreement with many of their positions and I did not want to be associated or affiliated with that element of the party, I feel they are way to the right and I want to be more to the center and independent,” said Savage.

The only honest Republicans are retired Republicans.

The problem with the Republican Party is the kooks and know-nothings that comprise their base. The Republican elite pandered to them, invited them in, fed them the propaganda they now credulously believe as gospel, and groomed them for office -- and now the kooks and know-nothings are their masters.
